I have used a DI box but usually use an isolator. I use Orchid units :

Though you play on MIDI 01 the KARMA outputs from the GEs can be sent to other MIDI channels (in Combi, not Program)

What about putting Output 1/2 through a stereo volume pedal?

Then you can tweak it without removing your hands from the keyboard. You could put one in place for your RD700 too for even more control ...
