Sounds to me like you just have your synth settings all wrong...

Start by turning the VCA Level up, and the VCF Cutoff up to halfway or more, the VCF Peak down low or at zero, and the LFO Int. to z ...

FWIW, the Miditribe I/O page does list this feature:

- Control external synths using the Ribbon Controller for Note ON / OFF, Expression Controller (CC 11) and Gate Time

Haven't tried it myself ...
