Use the joystick to click on a channel you want to select the input for.
As an alternative you can use the hardware buttons to select the channel. Then you should be able to assign the input to it.

The buttons are quite easy to replace for someone who knows the hot end of the soldering iron from the cold one. Try to find a repair shop if you can't do it your self. It shouldn't take longer than 1 ...

Maybe your hdd is broken. If you have a system recovery cd then you might try: open the D3200, disconnect the hdd, start with the recovery cd. It should complain that it can't find a hdd. But afterwar ...

But the red power led is on? (It always should be on as long as the power button on the rear side is pressed)

I can't write anything to a DVD-RW out of the package
Is that a typo? The D3200 can only handle CDs, not DVDs. "Erase" only works for rewritable CDs. You don't have to format CDs.
