given your situation, I say go for the ESX.

with your budget, and the fact that the ESX is already preloaded with nice kits and sounds, you can get by with it.

have you tried instantly pressing mute the moment it starts recording in song mode? that might do it. Would take perfect timing though but it's a start.

go for the warranty dude. I don't think your prob with running it to its peak caused it. I've gone through all incarnations of the KP and I never experienced that even running red.
