I am really getting into my keyboard now after simply "getting high" playing it for the last 18 months ! I have some experience of programming my own styles and the results are sometimes good and sometimes not so good. I have no trouble with the percusion and bass but a lot of the time the other parts like strings, guitars electric pianos and organs are really hit and miss and they are a little "jumpy" when i change chords or the strings line becomes unpredictable. does anyone have any expertise in creating styles within the PAX. I am trying to discipline myself to using just the PA1X as a stand alone instrument as it was intended to be so i am not really interested in using external software. This instrument has the capability to do incredible things but the manual doesnt really help users get the most out of the instrument. Can anyone help ?

Mr tramannoni we have waited such a very long time for a good instructional video or DVD for the PA1X. I know that there is an instructional clip on the korg website for the PA800 and it can be used for the PA1x but this is literally just a run through of the functions and simply scratches the surface. If i have any critisism of Korg , it is that it does not do enough to help its customers get the most from their instrument. I used to own the Yamaha psr 8000 and they produced 2 videos to help users get the basics of the instrument . The Tyros has a set of instructional DVDs and the T2 also has instructional DVD's some of which are from 3rd party supporterss. The PAX has been around for ages and yet despite the huge folowing it has , still no instructional DVD ?????

Is one ever gonna be forth coming sir ?????

Thanks for an incredible i nstrument. Now i want to use more than just 40% of its potential. Is Korg going to do something to help.....

PS a challenge to other PA1X users ( Reuben Karmathanever you know who you are )

How about pooling together and devising an instructional DVD on specific features of the PA1X that cause the most frustration ? WE worked as a colective to buy sharp a PA1X . Why not do the same for ourselves ?

There are more than just 10 people on this forum. does no one else have an opinion on a DVD ?

In the poll 1 person was happy that a DVD was not necessary as they were able to manage using the instrument fully by themselves. Would you be willing to sort out some formof DVD or be willing to provide say for example " Todays tip of the week" just to help out some of us that are struggling ?

There are over 100 views of this post but only 15 votes. If we as a group are uninterested in korg providing a DVD then they simply wont. Idont believe that the people on this forum could not use a good tutorial DVD. Please vote if you are going to view this post. Let Korg know either way if you need a tips and tricks DVD

Hi Worth,

This is a great idea which I'd happily contribute some cash and effort towards. I'll vote again if you like Smile

Do bear in mind that only registered forum users can vote, and the topic view counter clocks up every time it is browsed by anyone, registered or not. Also I must have returned to this page at least 98 times to see the results, so maybe most of the page hits are from me Smile

Thanks again,
Rob

I would love to help with Styles and adjusting sounds, but I am from an Organ Background and don't have much knowledge on the innards of a Korg Keyboard, but I don't mind paying for the help of others who have spent their time and effort. I have bought everything Sharp has produced (well worth the money) I have bought the Performance Pack. I know there is a great deal more to get out of this Keyboard, if I could learn to Programe it step by step. I always feel a little guilty when asking questions on this forum, as some of them can and are long winded. I feel let down by Korg on this one, their Manual is written for Techie's and not for me the musician. I can play it OK ---But I Can't Always Get It To Sound the Way I Like. It is Frustrating for me (and I suspect others) Because I Know The Sounds and Styles Are in There.

Thats more like it gentlemen ! Now all we need is a few volunteers who know elements of the instrument really well to come forward. They dont have to know the whole keyboard expertly.

Let me suggest some areas that might be usefull in getting some expert help on

1. Sound synthesis. This instrument is a thoroughbred from the triton range so lets see what it can do ? Galoutille perhaps?????
2. Sampling. I have just a cursory knowledge but i know the instrument is truly capable , who has an indepth knowledge and is comfortable in demoing this ? particularly making drum loops .Sharp ?????
3 Programming styles . How do you get the bass line or strings line right when changing chords that you programme yourself ?
4 Sequencer. Recording your own pieces from scratch and adding effects, quantizing correctly, tips and tricks to aid speed of recording . Work arounds to help with the limitation of the effects ...
5 General Performance tricks and tips for performance set ups in live play and/or studio

If you feel there are other areas of interest to you in this vast machine please list them. I suggest that by the end of next week we close the list and see who amongst the forum might want to tackle each part.

I am an ideas person and not a project manager but i know that there are members here who have that skill.

Last bit. It would be ideal if one person could tackle all the areas that we agree upon for consistency in the production of the DVD/video but i think that might be too much for one person to do unless they are willling to tender a qoute for the whole project. I am sure that between us we could raise the funds but of course we would then want the end product free to us just like when members here helped buy sharp his PA1X. Would some of the organisers of that project want to come forward and assist in this one ?

There is a gentleman on the Oasys forum who is undertaking this very same project for the Oasys. There cant be as many Oasys owners as there are PA1X owners so i am hoping that there is enough knowledge and good will between us to take on this project.

Ok gents, i have made some progress regarding a potential instructionl DVD. I contacted Chris Whitehead who was a korg pa1x demonstrator and product specialist for about 3 years and knows the instrument extensively.

He is willing to undertake the task of producing an instructional DVD espiacially for us . I told him that it would have to be an indepth instructional DVD last approximately 4 to 5 hours long with real additional tips and tricks that he as a pro would use.

He said that we would need to tell him exactly what areas we wanted covered and then to tell him how much we would be willing to pay him for the work.

So i need your feedback gents as we now have a genuine prospect of a DVD for the PA1x from a performers prospective rather than a simple explanation of the functions of the instrument from a technicians perspective.

Please list all the areas that you would like the DVD to cover i have already suggested some. This is our opportunity to get EXACTLY what we want from a professional demonstrator.

The thorny bit is price. I need to know what a reasonable cost for this project would be . And how many people are willing to contribute to the cost. Those interested ,please add your name in this thread so that we can get an idea regarding the numbers .

I will copy this to the Pa800 site and see if they want in on this project too.

If there was a time to take advantage of a performers pro knowledge of this instrument , may i suggest that the time is now ......

Worth,

Did you consider doing this in stages? Produce DVD 1, duration 1 hour, make it available at say 30 Euros, see how many sell. Ask Korg to help in promoting the DVD, see if they can contribute any cash to the project Use the proceeds from DVD1 to repay the investors and generate enough cash to fund DVD 2 etc. Why stop at 5 DVD's if the demand is there and the ideas for topics to cover keep flowing?

Some suggestions in no particular order:

a) Backing up the critical settings etc, learning the structure and different types of .set files and what they do when you load them.

b) Upgrading the OS and Musical resources to the latest version.

c) What all the Lock settings do, how to find them, what they are for.

d) Loading user sounds and styles from multiple .set files, and merging .set files to configure user sounds and styles in a personalised way.

e) Different keyboard modes and chord recognition, setting up the keyboard mode the way you want it and then preventing the settings from being overwritten when you load a new .set file or switch styles etc.

f) Sampling a drummer's live performance, converting this into grooves, then creating a number of styles and variations. Then adding acompaniment to the styles both by playing it from the keyboard, and by using step edit.

g) Doing multi-track recording, and editing out the wrong notes later.

h) Sampling a real instrument say a chello, mapping the samples to multisamples. Layering these onto the keyboard using velocity and aftertouch triggers, then applying various types of effects to create a number of different Sounds.

i) Demonstrations of playing the Pa1x "live" showing a wide variety of different styles, sounds etc and when best to use them. Maybe use something like the "Circle of Life" as an example if we can get permission.

If noone else makes suggestions, I'll post more later Smile

Cheers,
Rob

Like many others, I would willingly pay to contribute towards an instructional DVD. This is an amazing instrument and it would be great to go in depth on it. Sequencing is my area, please include something here.

A few more suggestions:

a) While demonstrating Sequencing, go on to show the full capabilities of the MIDI control track to change styles, sounds, effects, tempo etc.

b) Demonstrate how to set up Cakewalk Sonar and the Pa1x to work in the best way together (this might be contentious since other people might not be interested in PC sequencers or might have Logic etc).

c) Demonstrate how Band in a Box can be used with the Pa1x, using the Pa1x as a live instrument. Then show preparing MIDI song backings and downloading them to the Pa1x. Then show how BIAB styles can be converted to make styles and variations for the Pa1x using Style to Midi.

d) Take several different single line "fake sheet" scores, Jazz, Rock, Ballad, Country etc. Demonstrate how to make the most of playing each of these "live" on the Pa1x with different styles, sounds, variations, effects, layers. Then use the sequence record facilities to gradually build up really nice backing accompaniments and fills etc.

Best regards,
Rob

Worth,

Ideas on promotion and sales:

    a) We can set up a simple Ebay "shop" for these DVD's. If you want a volunteer I can do this to help you, but it's not difficult to do yourself.

    b) I think the project has to be self-funding through sales of the DVDs, and I think it has to operate on a "not for profit" basis. Members of the forum could be asked to be "investors" in the project, so long as the "investment" is repaid out of sales.

    c) I think we should stick to the Pa1x first, and once DVD1 for the Pa1x is released, we should ask Chris to do the same thing for the Pa800 using the same material.

    d) We should make the effort to print proper colour labels for each DVD and to prepare nice artwork and a DVD index, so it is real professional. We could ask for a volunteer from the forum to do this, someone who is a good artist and who has done good DVD/ CD labels before.

    e) We should ask Sharp and Daz to promote the DVD's with a sticky entry in the forum.

    f) We should contact all Korg distributors and retaillers, maybe offer a 25% discount on retail price plus give them stocks of DVD's on sale or return basis.

    g) The retail price will be very important. We should NOT pitch this as a low cost "give away", and let's face it we will be lucky to sell more than 100 to 500 of each DVD. So we need to divide the total production cost for each 1 hour DVD by say 100 to play safe, then set that as the retail price.

    h) For example, if a 1 hour DVD will cost about 2500 Euros to make, each DVD will have to be sold at about 25 Euros. Then as soon as 200 DVD's have been sold, there will be enough cash in hand to make the next DVD.

    i) When the plans are firm, we should announce the details of DVD1 via this forum, and see how many people would like to buy one at say 25 Euros. This will derisk the outlay for the investors.

    j) I think we should carefully plan the theme of each DVD, so there is something on each one for the beginner and the expert, something like the following:

DVD1: Beginner: Introduction to the Pa1x
Expert: Multi Track Recording on the Pa1x

DVD2: Beginner: Upgrading the Pa1x Operating System, Sounds and Styles
Expert: Sample recording on the Pa1x and Goove to Midi

When the first DVD is launched, the album cover will need to make it clear that this is number 1 of 5, and that these are the related titles etc. That way it will generate an ongoing demand from customers who buy the first DVD.
Chris Whitehead will have ideas on this, on the topics that should be covered, he is the expert demonstrator who the investors are paying, so let's ask him to work up a proposal on content for say five 1 hour DVD's, with costings?

Best regards,
Rob

lets get all the ideas together about what is wanted for the DVD. Then we can discuss its content and how it is balanced toward the end user be they expert or beginner. I am not trying to stunt your ideas Rob. I think they are great ! Just lets not put the cart before the horse. WE have to see what everyone wants first as they are the people who will buy the DVD at the end of the day. I dont want to duplicate what is already freely available or readily understood by PA1X/pa800 users.

I have already sent you a PM about how you can help with this.
