I know this might be silly, they are different animals, but actually I bought a Micro-X a few months ago, and while its not bad, many of the sounds are a bit too plain for me..

I could keep it, but im thinking the r3 is better, im more into electronic sounds and i found the micro x presets a bit corny for me, even though the editor is great..

my question is this, would you sell micro-x over the r3?

and is the r3 as good or nearly as good as a basic midi controller, can i plug the r3 in usb and start playing soft syths on my computer with it?

Also how does the vocoder compare to lets say warp factory or other vocoders out there?

and finally how does the arpeggiators compare, the arpegiators ont he micro-x are sick, so how are those on the r3?

in one word: YES! i would sell the micro-x. let me explain why:

- i like working with "real" synths, not with those having pcm-waveforms only serving as oscillators. i much more like the analogue things like sine, saw, square... and maybe ADDITIONALLY waveforms / wavetables...

- the r3 is awesome for lots of electronic sounds & genres!

- the r3 is a good midi-controller. via usb you can easily play all your softsynths. works really fine for me as well

- the vocoder can do lots of great and strange sounding things, as you can work with phrases, formants... i really like it....

- well, the arpeggiator is not that great - some 32-steppers or more (radias, virus (ti) etc.) are better for sure. but it's good enough for lots of things. and real arpeggios are always nicer if you play them on your own! Smile
you can also add the modulation-sequencer, which is some kind of another arpeggiator - you will be satisfied...

so, why don't you test it at a music store?

The Micro-X is much more flexible because of its workstation character. If you own no other synth (soft or hard), the Micro-X is the better choice.

But as add-on for a typical computer / soft synth scenario I vote definitely for the R3. BTW, the vocoder in the Radias / R3 is IMHO the best digital vocoder you can get for money.

Thomas

got the r3, friggin blows my mind, one of my fav synths ever so far, thick, rich, nice sounds.. vocoder is very cool

i kept my micro -x even though i dont like the menus.. gonna hurt my bank account, but maybe its good to have some normal sounds once ina while.. i like the arps on it as well

maybe ill sell it eventually

now shoudl i sell my kp2 and buy a kp mini? i like small things, portable things..

The KPmini don't have the sample-function which the KP2 has,
so if I were you I'd keep it until you have enough to buy a KP3.
You might not use the sample-function that often but on the KP3
there's two more slots which open up whole new possibilites. In
my case I fill my Radias 4 timbres with one sequence or FX each
then I sample each timbre to one of the KP3's slots. When done
I can loop the samples on the KP3 while i change and prepare
4 new on the Radias. That gives me "8" timbres instead of 4.
In your case the R3 has two timbres, and the KP2 two slots,
so sample each timbre on the R3 and fill the slots on the KP2,
with for instance bass and percs, loop em, do a solo on the R3.
Imagine that while you bang a background drone on the MircoX.
My suggestion in other words is, keep both the microX and KP2.
