LFO = Low Frequency Oscillator. It generates a signal at a low (below the range of hearing) frequency, and is used to modulate the sound in some way. For example, an LFO set to modulate pitch will cause the pitch to rise and fall, creating vibrato or a siren-like effect depending on the speed and depth. An LFO modulating filter cutoff creates a wah-wah effect. An LFO modulating amplitude creates a tremolo effect. The LFO can also modulate pulse width (PWM) or panning as well.
The Microkorg has two LFOs. LFO 1 by default will modulate the control amount on oscillator 1 (pulse width or wave shape depending on the waveform selected). LFO 2 modulates pitch by default when the mod wheel is moved up. The patch matrix can be used to have either LFO modulate any number of other things as well.
The LFOs have a number of waveforms too: triangle, square, saw, and sample-and-hold (level changes at random at fixed intervals). |
