So, the guitarist wants to do backing vocals in my band for live and recordings.
I don't have a problem with that, except he is really bad at vocals. Also, to add another mic to our audition space is hard since my mic already has to have lots of time put in to address all the feedback we get in the room.
I don't know how to tell him I don't want it. He is kinda the black sheep of the band and I worry if I keep shutting down his ideas that he will get disheartened and frankly, I don't think we can find another good 7 string player in he area (we have tried).
So what should I do? |

record his vocal performance and make him listen to it
either he'll give up, start practicing or he's completly deaf (and in that case there's no point in having him in the band )
I wanted to do backing vocals myself but my skills turned out to be insufficient so now I'm practicing at home... hope I'll be able to do that in a year or so |

Alright... I will give that a shot... worst case scenario if he still thinks it sounds good, it will mysteriously get lost in the mix. lol |

It's a peculiar phenomenon this thing about a bad singer not knowing how bad they really are, even when listening to playbacks of themselves. You just wonder where their ears are. But in the situation you have here, there's no two ways around this problem.
If he sucks as a vocalist, despite his good intentions, you just have to let him know that you can't use him as a vocalist - it's not fair to the other guys in the band.
Tell him you appreciate his work and strengths as a guitarist but for the greater good of the band, which, if he has the band's interests as a whole at heart, then he should be able to see your point and agree that the backing vocals should be left to those who can actually sing them.
Hope you can work things out. Sorry, I don't have Dr. Phil's phone number. Good luck. |

what are mixer for? aux to monitor high, volume to master = 0. A guitarist doesn't know what a mixer is... so don't worry he can understand what's really happening...
