after a year of playing with the MX I start to use the PCM oscillator and find some interesting sonorities

I end with some mellotronesque strings and choir by using the FX

I transcribe the basic "patch" for you to try...it consume the 3 FX processor but it could be useful to sample or recording into a DAW

OSC = PCM + WS

OSC WAVE = STRINGS 019 or M1-CHOIR 016

OSC EDIT 1 = 0

CUTOFF = 70

RES = 0

EG INT = 29

DRIVE = 38

MOD WAVE = TRIANGLE OR S/H

MOD DEPTH = 3 or 4

MOD SPEED = 80

EG TIME = 127

AMP IS IN GATE

now the VERY IMPORTANT FX processors

I chain the 3 FX, use 1 and 2 in pitch shifters for creating a chord, and FX 3 does reverb

the lo-fi (read crap) sound quality of this FX really help to create the mellotron mood

FX 1 = pitch shifter
FX1 ED1 = +0500 (5 semitones up)
FX1 ED2 = 89

FX 2 = pitch shifter
FX2 ED1 = +0400 (4 semitones up, see that you´re transposing 2 notes togheter, so you´ll get a 4 notes chord and more lo-fiying texture)
FX2 ED2 = 93

FX 3 = REVERB
FX3 ED1 = 41
FX3 ED2 = 96

now set the keyboard to OCTAVE 5 and play some notes

hope you like it

Hey, I gave it a try and it sounded alright Smile Much appreciated.

I think sharing stuff like this is a great way for us to expand our abilities.

There aren't many other places to get ideas on this stuff--

I vote for a sticky with useful knob configurations/combinations!

Cool stuff. Good idea with the pitch-shifter. Thank you.

I don't have an emx to try this but I'm definitely going to try the pitchshift efx thing to see if it works the same, I think it should, on my esx to make some chords. Right now the way i do chords is layering.

It would be nice to find a use for that pitchshifter effect. I've never used it before.

update:

Amazing! This is the best thing EVER! thanks. The songs I've been making lately depend alot on layering the same tones pitch shifted to make chords. I had been using 3-4 parts to make up the chords. With this trick i can get the chords with just 1 part. The next song i make is going to be the FATTEST.

so good.

You mate, how have you been structuring your layering? Question

I usually use keyboard part 1 for bass part 2 for a melody. Then, here is where the layering comes in, part 5, 6a, 7a are used to make chords. Part 5 is the root then 6a is pitch shifted up a major or minor third above (+12 or +15 using step edit>motion dest> motion value) and 7a I pitch shift up a 5th or 7th above the root note the same way. Sometimes I use different sounds on the three parts. For this to sound good you have to make sure the sounds are tuned, you can tune them in sample mode. I have a bunch of long, 3-5 second sustaining tones loaded into my ESX that i use for this.

Now with this new trick I can make chord sounds with just one part instead of using up three.
