Hello everyone.
Glad to see the forum up and running again.
A couple of days ago I uploaded two songs to SoundClick. It's the first time I've ever played my self-composed music to anyone, so this is definitely a world premiere.
I've created one thread for each song so that it'll be easier to know which song you are commenting on. I'll appreciate any feedback - just be honest and tell me what you think. If it sucks it sucks - I can take it.
So here's the link to my song "The Fairytale":
The Fairytale - lo-fi streaming
The Fairytale - hi-fi streaming
If these links don't work, just go to my SoundClick page: http://www.soundclick.com/RuneFoshaug
... and select the song "The Fairytale".
Enjoy. |

Not a single response so far... Can't really complain though, as I'm not very good at commenting on other people's music either.
But I've just uploaded this song to YouTube, together with some photos I've taken over the past couple of years (photography is another hobby of mine).
Enjoy.

My comment is on The Fairytale. The song is absolutely lovely. Nice melody and arp like piano arrangement that holds you throughout.
Some arrangement notes...
Nice piano beginning. Absolutely beautiful the way you build this song up. The low end comes in subtly at first before you reenter to refrain from the beginning.
The change up in the middle is nice. However, as the song continues to build and percussion comes in, I expected another lead earlier on, much like flute like sound that comes in the last 1/3 of the song. Honestly as much as I like the flute, it does not stand out far enough tonally from the piano. Maybe the piano could be toned back during the flute solo.
While I was not too taken by the percussion either, you have a fantastic song overall on your hands. It was relaxing and enjoyable. Glad you shared this with everyone.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your comment, Jon!
I agree that the flute part could have been louder (or the piano could have been toned back) to make it stand out more. The flute and piano are "competing" a bit in the same frequency region at times.
This is more noticeable the less hi-fi the sound is, and was quite noticeable when I listened to the YouTube video on my laptop, and the flute is at times a little bit "drowned out" by the piano. It's easier to separate the two on the SoundClick version, especially when listening on my stereo or through some decent headphones (also the stereo separation makes it easier in headphones).
As I see it, my three greatest "weaknesses" in music making are:
- interesting bass lines
- interesting and varied percussion
- mastering/mixing/polishing/finishing touches
while on the other hand, melodies, harmonies and chord progressions may be my stronger sides.
Anyway, it's great to get constructive comments like this, so thanks for that. |

But one question: what music genre is The Fairytale? On SoundClick I've placed it in Electronica (since it is created by electronic instruments), but I don't feel that this is the best genre for it to be in... |

Genre can be a mixed bag. It was very filmscape sounding to me.
As far as "weaknesses" I wouldn't categorize any of those as your weaknesses, though I have only heard this one song. For many here on the boards, they hear their own song over and over and over again resulting in one of two things: they fall in love with it, and nothing more can be done with it, or they hate it and never want to hear it again.
The best thing you CAN do is post it someplace like here and hope to get some honest feedback. That is how many have grown, myself included, musically and production wise.

first let me say that the song 'fairytale' is a wonderful piano piece.
you make the music for you
not us
it's what makes you happy
you can't always make everyone in your audience happy all the time
i too have been scared of what people would say about my music
i just recently put it on myspace for people to hear
i dont get too many people listening to it everyday
but some of the people who listen like it
of course with my name Bill Church when most people find my site they are looking for the famous Bass player
not the unknown keyboad player
i'm usually not one to comment on people's music for fear of hurting feelings
i know people are trying to help but sometimes the things i'm proudest of are the things they hate the most
so when i comment i'm not trying to hurt your feelings or make you feel that i dont like the song
on the contrary
i love it
i wish my tunes could express the same quality
i will comment only what i 'hear'
only because the same things have been brought to my attention in my music
maybe hearing something from someone with the same quirks will help you
as with jon i'm going to make two suggestions ( and they happen to be the same ones)
the percussion sounds like it's a canned four beat loop
i could "hear" more of a symphonic type percussion with kettle drums, snare and rolling cymbals.
of course this is just me.
the lead flute that comes in towards the end hides behind the piano
you could try bringing the piano down in the mix with the eq or use a different instrument
i was thinking oboe or violin
but this is your song
you do what you feel with it
i still think it is a wonderful piece and congratulate you on your 'world premiere'

Thanks for your opinions and comments.
I agree that the flute sound doesn't quite stand out from the piano sound, and generally the percussion and arrangement could have been more orcestral and maybe a bit "film score"-like.
Again, thanks for your sincere and constructive comments. Don't worry about hurting my feelings - I'm glad you gave me your honest opinions. And it's not like you hated the song either. So no worries, mate. _________________ For covers, synth tutorials, and my own compositions, check out my YouTube channel. |
