This discussion has already been around here and the OASYS forum several times.

The OS is 'tweaked' to run well specifically on a chosen CPU. That includes the specific timing of events and order that processes are carried out.

If this assertion is true:

Could that explain why Korg chose a cheap low performance Atom processor?

The performance of an Atom processor is quite close to the performance of a Pentium IV in an Oasys (cf. Pentium 4 Vs. Atom), so didn't Korg make that choice in order to cut costs by being able to re-use the code they had developed for the Oasys without having to retune it or to rewrite part of it, rather than chosing a processor with a much better performance to power consumption ratio (cf. Efficiency: Core 2 Nukes Atom) which would have given the Kronos a better polyphony(*), at the cost of having to rewrite a part of the code they had developed for the Oasys?

What makes me think this is that the Kronos sequencer is the same as the Oasys seq., and not the improved one of the M3 Xpanded...

(*) the Kronos polyphony is more than enough to play a solo instrument in program mode, even with a heavy use of the pedal when playing the piano, but what if you use the Kronos in combi mode or multi-timbral mode with several synth engines running at the same time?

On the Kronos website, they wrote:
A portion of the multicore processor in KRONOS is devoted to generating voices, and a separate portion is devoted to generating effects. KRONOS dynamically allocates the voice processing power between the engines as necessary. The quoted maximum numbers of voices apply when 100% of the voice processing power is devoted to a single engine.

still boils down to the fact that this stuff is built to a price. If the spec fits, build it!
