Not sure what the application is here. Can the audio signal be used as an operator/modulator?

Well, for starters: the application would be...FUN! And, maybe more importantly and directly answering your question: yes, it's possible.
You'll need to set up the audio input(s) in the Common tab of the MOD-7 patch and route it to the appropriate bus (I'm using Input 1 as Left for my patch). Then you just double-click on the Audio In in the EXi's patch panel and route it wherever you see fit. For my simple patch I've simply routed it at level 100 to Osc 1's first input and left the remaining settings alone.
All that's left to do is twiddle with the params on the Kronos and on the source signal!
