A Tribute to the "Original" 1994 Korg Wavedrum
Every so often someone asks about the “Original,” original Korg Wavedrum—the one that came out it 1994! For others, they never knew that such an instrument existed. I thought it would be cool to have one place were we could gather pics, video clips and other media sources as a tribute to the Wavedrum that started it all. That being said, it’s impossible to begin such a topic without paying tribute to the fine efforts of Tim Pasch. I started a previous thread about his most-excellent site dedicated to the 1994 Wavedrum which you can find here:
http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=65110&sid=e9a3a68858818c47b45db2d7dd6b6c27
According to the interview on Tim’s site with the Wavedrum designers, Mr. Mori and Mr. Motohasi, Korg produced about 700 to 800 of the Original Wavedrums. Of those, they only made about 20 of the extremely rare ones that came in different colors—black, red, or green. It’s my understanding that the Original Wavedrum sold for close to $3,000.00 (and maybe even more with the editing controller). I don't own one of the "Original" ones myself, in fact I've never even had the opportunity to play on one. But I just love how substantial and artistic the design was. I find it to be very compelling and intriguing.
Here a couple of nice pictures I found of the Original Wavedrum.
This is one is fascinating because it's one of the few images I've ever found of the RE-1 Editing Controller that came with the Original Wavedrum. Look at that thing!
"The RE1 connects via a multi-pin socket at the back of the instrument, alongside which are a pair of output jacks, a pedal input, 'Rim' in, and MIDI In, Out, and Thru ports. The pedal input is useful, giving you continuous controller pedal control of any parameter within a program."
I've collected quite a few links and resources over the past couple days. I'll try to pace myself and not post everything all at once. But let's get this started... |

Very nice thread, I'm one of a proud owner of the original since 1995. Here's a great article about the original Wavedrum: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1994_articles/nov94/korgwavedrum.html _________________ Korg: Wavedrum/Mini/Global, MS-20m, Volca Beats/Bass/Key, Trinity Pro, Karma + Moss Board, 01R/W, Wavestation/SR/EX, microKORG XL, Kaossilator Pro, iKaossilator, Kaoss Pad Quad, Monotribe, Monotron/duo/delay, DS-10, Korg Collection V2, Korg Gadget, microKEY25

I also highly recommend this link to a collection of photos from Matrixsynth. They are stunning in quality, and reveal details of the 1994 Wavedrum that I have never seen before.
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/matrixsynth/tags/wavedrum/
Here's a nice close-up of the removable rim. You'll notice in the second pic that there were three tension rods used to hold the rim in place. The rim was a separate trigger source that would plugged into its own input when use. Tuning of the actual drumhead could still be achieved by the holes in the rim that allowed access to the tension rods that affected the head.
A good look at the front and back panels.

Ha! You beat me to it! I found that Sound-On-Sound review yesterday and was going to post a link as well.
I've seen your avatar in other threads and was hoping you'd join in this thread. Your internal Wavedrum alert must've gone off because it didn't take you very long. Thanks for that link!
That's an article about the Korg Wavedrum when it was first released. It's quite a long read but very, very interesting nonetheless. Lot's of information there. I was planning on reading through it again and posting some highlights.
[Edit] Here are some highlighted quotes from the 1994 Sound On Sound review:
Quote: | I also liked the editing system in general. You can swap programs from one location to another, and you can audition either your source or your destination in order to avoid accidentally erasing some priceless piece of programming. | Oh, wouldn't that be nice a feature to have today!
Quote: | If you are the sort of person who must have the latest technology, then you must expect a certain amount of beta testing to come with the territory, and similarly, you shouldn't be surprised when the inevitable, lower-cost 'variations-on-a-theme' arrive on the scene. |
Quote: | So for someone who's touring, £1800 isn't going to be that much. But for the average percussionist who doesn't gig very often, then it may be a bit expensive -- hopefully there will be a smaller, cheaper instrument in the future." | Ha! I bet they never expected it to be 15 years before another, more affordable version was released!
I find it very interesting to the read the perspective of these people who had never seen anything quite like the Wavedrum. Still today many people have no idea what they're looking at or hearing when exposed to the Wavedrum for the first time. But they are always blown away.

Great to see a very enthusiast WD-1 user, it's always an honour to own such a beauty. Next year I'm going to release a chill out / new age album featuring many sound of the WD-1. That sounds like a nice project!
Do you remember exactly how much the original Wavedrums cost at the time?
Was the RE1 editor included or was that an expensive add-on? |

The RE1 is an add on, which was not too expensive actually. It's originally made as a controller for the M3R. The WD-1 was around $3000 that time. _________________ Korg: Wavedrum/Mini/Global, MS-20m, Volca Beats/Bass/Key, Trinity Pro, Karma + Moss Board, 01R/W, Wavestation/SR/EX, microKORG XL, Kaossilator Pro, iKaossilator, Kaoss Pad Quad, Monotribe, Monotron/duo/delay, DS-10, Korg Collection V2, Korg Gadget, microKEY25

Very great thread WaveDrummer !, very interesting.
Certainly it's BIG BROTHER of MORK have created the original wavedrum in 1994
all the movie of the original wavedrum is very rare, i discover in this thread many link about that now, really appreciate.
Now, i hope the son of MORK release the third generation of wavedrum with USB connector again with midi ability
Seriousely, sometimes i think the wavedrum 1994 was better than the actual wavedrum, 62 algo in 1994 against 45 today, midi implement in 1994 model and the actual model nothing, and other features are there in 1994 like a footswith etc.....why ?
it's the same problem that the proposed walk on the moon, mankind has been able to do 40 years ago .... but today, NASA says it is more difficult today to return to the moon .... Apart from the money it would take of course, there is really a technology problem ....
How NASA can say something like that?, 40 years ago we had the technology and now with all the progress achieved we could not do it more easily? ... it's amazing
I had the answer to this question not long ago:
the reason is simple, at the time, America would only show its technological superiority with the saturn 5 rocket against the Soviets ... unfortunately, when they managed this feat history, NASA consider that n 'would not need to go back .... so they do not archive all their research on the necessary equipment has all the Apollo missions
This means basically that today, NASA is unable to rebuild the Saturn 5 rocket!, They lost the manufacturing plan, believing that they have no longer needed
The Saturn 5 rocket was the most powerful in the history of aerospace ....
I say all this because I am passionate about astronomy.
Well, going back to Wavedrum, KORG has everything redone since the 1994 version, because the technologies have changed, the DSP has the time were very expensive, for this reason that the price of today Wavedrum is affordable ... but it does not explain why Korg did not implement a USB connector, it would have cost more, but I'm sure that users are prepared to pay more than $ 150 for their Wavedrum a USB connector included
definitely, I would never understand their policy
As said Mork, it is now inconceivable to sell an electronic instrument with no USB connector, it's right, i agree with him. |

I was watching for awhile for a used original wavedrum but found out quick they don't come up often and when they do they command a fairly high price, at least for my budget. Still with today's technology there is no good reason to not have some of that functionality in the new WD other then profit margin. |

One thing that I was hoping to spark from this thread is that I am really trying to track down a video that no longer seems to be posted on YouTube or anywhere else. A few years ago, if you searched for “Wavedrum” on YouTube, there was one clip that would come up quite easily (before Korg reintroduced it in 2009, there weren’t many clips at all. Now there are hundreds!). I’m almost positive the percussionist used to play with Cirque du Soleil. He was playing both an Original Wavedrum and a Roland Handsonic. It was a really nice melodic solo with a cool groove. I’ve watched it a number of times but now I just can’t seem to find it.
One of the most significant things about that particular clip was that the Wavedrum in the video was one of the very rare ones that had a tinted finishes to it—it was a black stain (and with an ebony head), and really gorgeous. As noted above, there were only a few of those ever made. I also remember the same guy had one or two other clips of himself playing percussion. In one of them he was playing conga, that much I remember. I did some extensive searching using time/date filters but to no avail. It must've been removed for some reason. I need to start downloading and saving all my favorite clips! If anyone can track it down, it would be great to share with the forum.
Or if anyone simply knows who it was, or that person himself comes across this thread, even better! |

Well it might be Darrell Craig, but Cirque has had many drummers come and go over the years.
John Thomakos was one other I know of.
Maybe they have their own sites with vids. |

It's definitely not either of those guys. But Darrell's name comes up in almost every search I did for "wavedrum" because he has it as one of his tag-words in his Youtube listing. But all the videos are of him playing bass, although I see from LP Music website that he is a percussionist. I had actually already sent him a PM hoping for a lead but he wasn't sure who I was referring to either (I'm still not entirely sure why he has "wavedrum" as "tag" in all his bass videos).
Thanks for the tip though. The quest continues... |
