We don't see as many Radias posts anymore... yeah, it's been around quite awhile and was discontinued.

I've had mine for a couple years now, but only recently started really digging into programming it. I printed out the current thread of "tips and tricks," but hope a few owners here will drop in and share something new and interesting they've discovered over the years.

Very Happy

I'd really love to see making modern 'dirty' music- electro, dubstep, dirty DnB etc- using the Radias's formant and FM/VPM features. I feel that they really aren't explored enough except for vocoding and EPs/rhodes/etc; but the Radias has so much potential for making music of the type while retaining a standard subtractive synth feel that synths like Razor or Massive lack.

I personally need to use my R3 more D: It's just a pain to work with cables and live audio, especially considering how the R3 only has two timbres.

I find Cross (FM) modulation is good for designing transients when making drum sounds. The initial attack of 'unpitched membranophones' have densely packed higher harmonics with general noise in the signal. FM or AM(ring) produce a lot of sideband information from the fundamental that is mathematically related to what comprises the sound (as opposed to using a general noise osc). The depth of FM can be controlled via an envelope so you can fashion some realistic hits.

I view VPM as FM with an extra oscillator. The sine wave used to modulate operator one is harmonically related. For instance if control 2 of VPM is set to the 2nd harmonic its the same as using Cross Mod with Osc2 set to sine at +12 semitones. This frees up Osc2 to be used as a sub oscillator or whatever you want to do with it. I made this sound while doing that: http://soundcloud.com/wolf-ray/vpm-robot-example

I was thinking about uploaded some RADIAS tutorials like how to make a 'ducked' delay effect, or how to internally route multiband parallel compression on one of the factory drum loops to say, add punch to the snare (so you don't have to edit the kit). maybe i'll do that tomorrow. I just don't want to become one of those tutorial people like ryan enzed or something

I've been having too much fun with my MS2000B.
Hope to get back into the Radias and share some tips. I've also filled up all of the banks with my own programs so nowhere to save new experiments Rolling Eyes
This has actually happened four or five times but I don't have the editor software installed at the moment.

Also plan on perhaps doing a comparison with the MS2kB and porting some of the more interesting patches over.

I'm of the same opinion as tpantano and I've been trying to craft a good formant performance patch that thickens up with the modwheel, but I tend to get sidetracked during the workflow and lose the tack I was going with. I think discussion like this is a good way of establishing a direction.

Lately on my R3 I've been headed more in the direction of "moving" patches, using the LFOs with a flat EG for trance pads but with limited satisfaction in the results. The sound I'm trying to make is basically a patch that soars from basic hum into a high-pitched crescendo sweep with the mod wheel. So far my best results seem to be from a cross-modded saw(?)-sine combo with diffierent waveshaping, but I also want to be able to kick a variable-rate LFO into it for max power. At my current level of expertise I'm having some trouble wrapping my head around all the patch routing though, so it's slow going.

What kinds of sounds are other people currently trying to get out of your R3/Radiases?[/b]

I've started treating the Radias like a vintage analog synth with no preset memory. Basically, I dial up a patch and then completely take it apart until the sounds, arps & sequences are working for me. Then I'll create an ambient song with the result. I guess I should record my efforts because they are starting to sound great.

I occasionally save the edited results, but more often just start a new "session". It's more spontaneous that way and keeps the creative juices flowing.

Just loving this keyboard more and more!

A very cool idea! I had a Waldorf Q a few years ago and did a similar thing. I'd twiddle the knobs till I had a cool patch and record a minute or so of it. Then I'd play back the song, twiddle some more and create a 2nd patch which was complimentary to the first and record it from about the middle of the 1st part to a minute after. Then I'd do the same thing with a 3rd patch, etc. Each new patch leapfrogging the existing song to about a minute after. The idea was to simulate what a band like Tangerine Dream would do with each synthesist listening to what the others were doing and adding a new part to it. It was so much fun I did a whole CD of it and called it "Tangerine Dreaming" Very Happy

This is the technique I base most of my own projects off.
Stuff I do with my band is different as we write specific songs and I work with the singer to achieve exactly what we're looking for and it's very thought out.
Taking the complete opposite process for my own stuff is a nice way to do something completely different.
