Hello everyone,

Is there anybody out there willing to help a poor newbie getting rid of headaches when trying to make his brand new Kronos work in MIDI with a sequencing software?

Here's the situation:
- I'm working on OSX (10.7), using Korg's USB midi driver 1.1.1 (r1).
- The Kronos is connected in USB to the mac.
- Kronos boots, then the mac boots.
- For sequencing, I use Presonus Studio One (1.6.2)

When I try to setup the MIDI in my sequencer, I can select "KRONOS KEYBOARD" as MIDI input, but I can't select nothing else than "KRONOS SOUND" as MIDI output.

So the Kronos sends MIDI to the sequencer, but the sequencer can't send MIDI back to the KRONOS.

I tried to look in the Kronos' Globals for MIDI, but could not find anything suitable to make the system work as intended.

Is there any light in the tunnel to help me achieve this very simple thing (obviously, I must be too dumb to understand). I guess that has something to do with beeing able to select "KRONOS KEYBOARD" as a destination for MIDI output, but I really can't get to it...

Thanks a million in advance for any help on this!

Dunno about Presonus but in Cubase, using the Korg driver, the Kronos shows up as KRONOS SOUND (which is what the driver calls it), I select that as output and I can send MIDI to the Kronos using the USB port.

And did you had to setup something on the Kronos to make it work? When I select "KRONOS SOUND" as the output, nothing seems to go back to the Kronos...

You cannot monitor midi without an audio output. Are you using an audio interface or are you trying to monitor USB audio from the Kronos?

I'm not sure I understand your question, sorry. I'm just trying to get what has been recorded on Studio One from the Kronos to be played back by the Kronos. Just MIDI data, no audio involved. Hovewer I'm not sure neither I understand if USB MIDI works the same way as regular MIDI.

You cannot monitor midi if it has no audio output which seems to be the problem here. I'm not at Kronos now, but in global/audio you have to select USB 1 and USB 2 so that you can hear the midi coming into the keyboard..
Maybe someone can jump in here and give you a clearer answer..

Nope. Just plugged the laptop USB port into the Kronos USB port. However, I'm using Windows, not OSX, though I don't think that should make a difference. Make sure it's the USB B port as USB A won't work.

I'm going to try with a Windows-based machine... On the mac, despite that I adjusted USB 1&2 to "L/R" in Global/Audio, I can't get anything to work from the sequencer to the Kronos. Actually, in Studio One, I can't even set an output - it's blocked to "None".

Or did I miss something with the USB audio configuration? I have to say, the user manual is a bit cryptic on the matter...

Well, well, look at that... Just booted my windows-7 laptop, installed my copy of Acid Pro 7, installed the Korg USB driver, hooked up the Kronos, and it works like a charm. MIDI in, MIDI out, program change, it's OK.

I think i'm good to go with Windows. Must be one of those mac oddities... However I'd like to understand why it doesn't work on OSX. Maybe a driver issue?

Working fine here with OSX 10.7.3 and Logic 9 - no additional Korg driver setup needed (other than installing it), works straight out of the box.

Now that things seems to be on track with Windows, I was wondering if any other Kronos user had already created an instrument definition file for the most common DAWs (.ins, .xml or .reabank). As you can imagine, I'd be happy to get my hands on such a piece of art Very Happy

I use Studio One Artist.

I found the answer to this question after much frustration trying to get the sound on Kronos - finally a PreSonus You tube video explaned how to configure.

Go to the Options menu
1) PreSonus -> Studio One -> Options

2) Click "Add"

3) In the pop up dialog, click "New Instrument" (You would have used a "New Keyboard" to get the midi "in" to Presonus. Now you add KRONOS as an Instrument that can play midi.)

4) In your input setting (kronos as a midi source/keyboard) set "Receive from" and select all the 16 chanels. Don't select any "Send To"

5) In the "new instrument" defined in step 3), don't select any receive from, just select "Send to" and select all the channels.

6) This way, your "Kronos keyboard" setting sends midi to StudioOne and "Kronos instrument" setting would route back midi from StudioOne to Kronos to be used as an audio engine.

Remember to "turn off" local in Global setting to avoid any re-triggers.

Also, recommend exploring Studio One tutorial videos on You tube

Let us know if this works fine.

Cheers!

Well, that'd be a start and I could use it to extrapolate a definition file for other DAWs. if you agree, I'd like to get a copy.

I've got one for Cakewalk (or Sonar), one for Power Tracks and a couple for Cubase, if anyone wants them. I could post them but they're a bit long so send me a PM.
