Hi all!

I would like to use my R3 to reproduce an mp3 containing a horse whinny...

Can I do that with the budled program?

Such an odd request, haha...

You can sort of do this using the Format Motion feature. Honestly, no one here is going to explain this feature any better than the manual, so read about it there first. It's on page 18.

After that, I suggest finding a patch in Bank O (Format Motion) which you wish to get rid of, then initialize it. From there, follow the manual's instructions on recording audio into the R3. Once you got the sample loaded in, it's a matter of cycling through all the oscillator options till you find something that sounds the closest to it.

Re's suggestion is pretty solid. Aside from that, you might wanna muck around with motion sequencing and maybe set some patches to the mod wheel. Good luck on your weird adventure!

The first thing a noob should learn is what tools are best to use for a particular purpose. A VA Synth like the R3 is the worst tool for the job of trying to reproduce any animal noises that have any complexity beyond mere bird calls/whistles. So, you are wasting your time trying to use the wrong tool for the job. Any device that can merely playback the recorded audio will be infinitely easier and better at the job than any VA synth. You can do this with an SP-404 in about 15 seconds.

I probably should have mentioned that the R3 is NOT a traditional sampler. It can record small bits of audio, but the audio is only used for triggering the vocoder. All the factory presets in Bank O will give you an example of what it will end up sounding like, which would be like farm animals owned by Kraftwerk.

It's not even recording small bits of audio, is it? AFAIK it records the changes in levels of the vocoder's bands, hence 'format motion' not 'audio recording'.

This is correct. It's not actual audio that it records, but a digital representation of audio. I didn't quite remember how the manual explained it off the top of my head.

Anyway, here's a creepy visual that would go well with Vocoder Horse:

Oh I got it...

so all the sounds that look like sampled are always obtained with manipulation on R3...

Amazing!

I'll solve it using a silly sound pad on my phone: the horse whinny I've found is far too cool to tranform Smile

Thanks to everybody for suggestions: I'll look anyway at those pages of the manual so maybe I get some terrible new ideas to increase the hate my neighbourhood have towards my R3.
