You've played only Korg keyboards.

Most of non-Korg 76/61 key synths have dedicated octave or transpose buttons.

Actually I've only played old keyboards but if I was a designer I'd probably do it the same way purely form a cost standpoint. A multiple use button is more cost effective than 2 buttons. One being a dedicated transpose button and the other a "whatever you want". I'm not saying I agree with it though and I'm sure that it's not done to push more expensive keyboards. The weighted boards are more expensive to manufacture, I imagine.
