Firstly may I take the time to thank all of you who have given me sound advice thus far in my quest to work the Esx out. Ok so now I cam load on new samples and make beats, happy days. But now I really can't get my head round this sampling lark? I read somewhere a while back that it's an art form I believe the writer. Having sat with the manual I can't figure it out at all. I can record a sound at a good level but anything after that I'm lost.
I've been trying to remix a friends acoustic track but what do the values on start, end and loop start represent? Also how do I match the bpm with the tribe drum track ? As for stretch etc
Any help as always is greatly appreciated. Sorry again folks. _________________ Electribe esx1,microkorg,zoom mrs8,evolution 49,line 6 pod,akg d5,les paul gt special,Martin dx,monotron delay,Behringer mx400,behringer xenyx 1832fx |

It's painful for sure, but what makes it hard to give any advice is the scope of your questions and not knowing what you do/don't understand about the process. You ought to figure out what you need to know and leave more specific questions.
...but I can't rag you out too bad, because it sounds like you figured out how to record a sample from the line-in and learned how to access the SAMPLE EDIT menu, which is promising! Therefore, here's a step-by-step to get you situated with the core sample-editing functions...
To make ANY tweaks to the raw sample to get it ready for performance, you'll have to make sure you're in SAMPLE EDIT mode (light up the 4th button, I think it is, under the LCD display), then you've got several options. Most of these are within the menu (use up and down arrows to the left to scroll between these) and let you define the START POINT, END POINT, LOOP START, etc.
The loop variables are for samples that you're gonna play using the KEYBOARD PART, since the DRUM PARTs are considered "one-hit" and never loop. What this does is make it so you can hold down a "key" on the keyboard and it'll loop like a continuous tone, so pick any sample you'd like to play melodically for editing. By default, the sample start and end points will be the very start and end of the whole, uncut sample...you can ignore these for now. Go down to "LoopStat" in the menu and you should see some ungodly mess of numbers (the value). You want to make this sample loop from the start, right? Well to do this, you can scroll the main wheel till this value is "00000" AKA the very beginning (hold SHIFT to make it scroll faster)...now hit WRITE twice to save it. Your sample will now loop as a tone in the KEYBOARD PART, but we'd better test this...
Go in PART MODE, select KEYBOARD PART 1 and set its sample to the one you just edited. You should be able to hold down any of the 16 key buttons and have it loop the sample endlessly. If it's looping, take a swig of your beverage of choice and celebrate your first sample-editing success on the ESX!
This is just a taste of the way you can edit the samples that make up the sonic foundation for your parts. Remember I said not all the options are available in the SAMPLE EDIT menu? You'll find the others as SHIFT functions of the 16 step buttons...see the words "Normalize", "Time Slice" and "Truncate" below these buttons? These are some more options you can use when you've got the SAMPLE EDIT button lit. To access them, stop playback and hold the round SHIFT button and hit the appropriate key. These functions are specialized and a little more complex, so I recommend looking them up in the manual to learn how to use them. The TimeSlice function in particular is some next-level stuff, so set aside some time to get used to it and keep the manual handy for reference.
Good luck, and most importantly: don't give up! You'll feel like a mad scientist and totally in control once you master these fuctions and get things set up to dominate live. |

Also, you'll need to use the "timestrectch" function to make a sample (like your friend's acoustic bit) match whatever tempo you choose for the remix. You'll need to play with this one, but basically what the menu value ("StrcStep", I think it's called) means is how long--in 16th steps--this should be stretched to fit the beat. The easiest example is to take a single 4-beat/1-bar loop (TRUNCATED aka perfectly-looping) and set the StrcStep value to 16 and save this. Now, in PART EDIT mode, select a STRETCH PART and assign it the sample you edited (should be the only one available ). Give it the first step in the sequence, make sure it's 16 steps long in "GateTime" in the STEP EDIT mode (another menu to dive!), and play it. You should be able to jack up/slow down the tempo in PATTERN MODE while this plays and have it stay in pitch.
Take the time to go over these posts and if there's anything you're confused about (it's a lot of info), just leave it. |

thanks very much you 2, slowly getting bits together now
ive sat for the last 30mins and can now use my samples as stretch and slice parts. the looping and beat matching still isnt there but im now a long way from where i was last night. i will have to slowly go through things till i figure it out. samplers are a totally new thing to me this is the 1st experience ive had with them. Thanks again for giving me some of your time guys its greatly appreciated. now a few peroni's and some more plodding lol _________________ Electribe esx1,microkorg,zoom mrs8,evolution 49,line 6 pod,akg d5,les paul gt special,Martin dx,monotron delay,Behringer mx400,behringer xenyx 1832fx |

I'm only one guy, but I realize I'm as good as like...2 or 3
Getting it to match the tempo is just a matter of getting the sample to loop (nearly) perfectly and using that Timestretch. I say "nearly" cause you can just have it re-gate itself every loop, which means the offset won't multiply and get worse each time. If you've done this successfully and given it the right number of stretch steps (# of bars divided by 16) then it'll match any tempo as a Stretch Part.
There's also the "Auto BPM Detect" button for calculating tempo on the fly from a live feed, but it's sketchy... |
