There are assorted threads where people have talked about problems importing their own SF2 sounds into Kronos, but the info is scattered, and none seem to offer any solutions for those having problems. Yet other people seem to have done it successfully.

I'm hoping we can consolidate some useful info into one place, in this thread. I'd like to ask people who have tried to import SF2 files into the Kronos to post here, with the following info:

* what program did you use to generate the SF2? (i.e. Extreme Sample Converter, SampleRobot, Samplit, whatever)

* did you do this on the original Kronos OS or 1.5?

* were you successful or not?

I think that would be the minimal useful info. If possible, if you could include additional info that may be helpful, that would be great... like...

* how many velocity layers was your sample?

* how big was the sample? (total file size)

* have you tried loading multiple SF2 sounds simultaneously?

and anything else you think might be relevant.

Maybe we could see some pattern here about what tends to work and what is likely to be more problematic.

From the thread at:

I see you can now download a demo version of 4 from their web site. Has anyone tried it? I would, but I'm on a Mac and don't have access to running PC programs at the moment...

If this works, maybe this would be around the SF2 problems completely, if the program itself supports Kronos native format. I wonder if SampleRobot could even be used to convert SF2 files themselves to Kronos format (as opposed to necessarily having to create the original samples in SampleRobot itself).

(And I've changed the subject of the thread from SF importing to SF or direct importing, since this method might allow you to skip the SF2 step format completely.)

EDIT: I got an email from them, the Kronos file compatibility isn't in there yet, but will be soon.

Maybe in three weeks we will know more, if they get the new version done in time.

I will stop trying to find workarounds facing Kronos sf2 import issues, until I have checked the coming Sample Robot 4 kmp export feature. Well working direct export into the Kronos would make things much easier.

For this thread maybe it is also imporntant, that someone mentioned Awave as program already exporting samples into Korg format, but I forgot the details and have no experience using that.

Well, this thread was a failure in terms of helping people figure out what did and didn't work in importing Soundfonts, or narrowing down exactly what the issues were, but at least with the release of the recent OS updates, we can enjoy the knowledge that all the problems weren't all our own fault, that the Kronos did indeed have issues dealing with soundfonts. From the release notes:

New, improved conversion of Akai and SoundFont 2.0 libraries
Import of Akai and SoundFont 2.0 libraries has been improved in various ways. Most notably:
* Up to 16 stereo velocity zones are now supported within a single HD‐1 Program
* Increased compatibility with variations in SoundFont 2.0 formatting and naming
* Enhanced support for SoundFont 2.0 synthesis parameters

And then specifically in the update from 2.0.1. to 2.0.2:
Conversion of SoundFont 2.0 data has been significantly improved.

One thing that surprised me, though, is that I had a patch with a failed soundfont attempt from under 1.x on my system, and when I upgraded to the new OS, I didn't even have to reimport it. Unless my memory played tricks on me, it seemed that the patch that didn't work right before suddenly automatically worked right, just by installing the new OS!

And it is refreshing to read the other threads where people seem to now be having such success, where this was so problematic before. This really opens the Kronos up to all kinds of nice new possibilities!

+1

I'm using Samplit to create multisamples on a Mac and exporting them to SF2... No loading problems. Kronos OS 2 has sorted everything. Very Happy
