Ok. The white plastic piece detaches from the green main board, correct?

I think there's an inner to the ribbon connector that just pops out

Ok. Just to make sure I know what you mean. You're saying I pull the small ribbon out from inside the white connector?

Pull gently, I think it kind of pops out. Don't force it

It doesn't seem like it wants to come out and I think I almost tore it. I can get to the contacts by just gently standing the board on it's side though so I'm not going to press my luck trying to remove it any further. One more question and then I should be good. What are the contact points exactly? Is it the gold traces around where the buttons go?

Yes, the gold squiggles are the contacts.

Awesome. Thanks for all the helpful posts. I haven't got the contact stuff yet but when it's all said and done I'll post the results.

Just to be clear, you paint the underside of the buttons, not the contacts on the motherboard.

Might as well Swab the gold contacts with some contact cleaner while you are at it. Caigs contact cleaner or radio shack tv contact cleaner. Light amount on a qtip.

Yes, from experience, it really is worthwhile. The coating that's on the stock buttons rubs away onto the contacts and coats them in a bit of a film. A gentle cleaning in the way you suggested brought off quite a bit of unwanted gunk.
