Hi,just wondering if anyone has been able to program a string sound close to this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FtvwLSWBx0 on kasabians track i.d. (comes in at 1min 13secs) on the microkorg?Heres another example (starts at 22secs)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf2hEQp7saY .Sounds kinda like tape strings on a mellotron.Ive gotten somewhat close to it but cant seem to nail that mellotron character. If anyone has and would be kind enough to share the settings, would be much appreciated.Cheers

Most VA synths can't do good mellotron. That's because mellotrons are basically looped tape recordings of live strings, with relatively poor audio quality due to the low fidelity of the gear. That people end up liking the low quality loops is understandable for it's nostalgic sound, but it's rather difficult to accurately make a high quality digital VA synth sound like a low quality tape player.

The two approaches to do this are to have a high quality, long looped sample on a sampler workstation of the low quality loop, or to have rather powerful DSP effect to simulate the mechanical tape jitter, and most VA synths don't have this effect. So basically, you're using the wrong tool for the job. The original artist probably used a mellotron sample library of some kind, not a VA synth, so you'll have to do the same thing. You can do some things that kinda sound mellotron glitchy, but to do it well requires slowing down and speeding up sampled strings in the time domain, which is easy to do on a shitty tape recorder but hard to simulate unless you have a digital effect that's designed specifically to do that effect. There are plenty of tape effects available as softsynth/VST plugins, and plenty of mellotron sample libraries.

I hate to suggest external gear and I don't know how well a guitar pedal would work but this does tape delay really well, at least for guitar. Would this be of any use on a keyboard for this application? I don't know.

The delay on the microKorg is actually already quite 'tapey'.

But tape strings (mellotron strings) is not really about tape delay. As already mentioned, each key on the mellotron triggers a tape recording of a real string section. A virtual analog synth emulates an analog synth where audio signals are generated by changes in voltage states in solid components. it's just two entirely different technologies.

Generally if you want to play 'real' instrument sounds, you don't want a VA, but a sampling workstation or other sample playing software.

The microKorg actually has a 'tape string' preset but it does not sound much like a mellotron except in the really basic sound character.
