I thought some of you might be interested in my present home set up. For the last few months, I’ve been playing the PA600 with an old Yamaha YPR-9 keyboard (that I happened to have, although you can pick these up for around £40 or £50 if you can find them. they were hundreds when first sold ) fitted directly below and tight up to it. The difference in height between the the two keybeds is only about 4 inches (approx 10 centimetres) so it’s fine as a double manual and there is still plenty of legroom. The YPR-9 is connected to my PC through a Focusrite Saffire 6 MIDI interface and the headphones output of the interface is connected to the PA600 audio in, so that all sounds are routed to the PA600 speakers (or headphones). Only the YPR-9 is connected by MIDI to my PC, so that I can play each keybed separately, or I can play them together organ style. I use the lower (YPR-9) MIDI keyboard with Ableton Lite which came free with the interface, although something like Cantabile software, which has a free version will also host your VSTs. There are plenty of free VSTs available online, including organs with adjustable drawbars. The PA600 has some good organ sounds and you can load lots more. The PA600 is not connected by MIDI at all and I only use the USB connection when transferring files between PC and Keyboard. I am also able to use my Ipad with the lower keyboard (Apps like, Nave synth etc.). I had an old scart switch box lying around and since scart is more or less obsolete now, I made up a Midi changeover switch to change the MIDI connections from the focusrite interface to a cheapo generic interface (Ipad won’t talk to an interface that needs specialist drivers like the Saffire six) at the press of a button. The YPR-9 is probably one of many old keyboards or controllers you can use, and this combination of MIDI and non MIDI seems to work quite well.
