I took Sharp's orchestral soundbank (converted from Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra) and added the best sounds from free soundfonts on Deviant Art.

The result is a rather extensive orchestral library for Kronos.

MD5 hash: 22001be111c351b12e59c3046373f046
SHA254 hash: a86cd62cb44d158cb8c9c9408f1ab32a47a27b0f01cbe6c1266c17929cef1b6a

It's around 524 MB compressed, 900MB uncompressed. (I used 7zip on maximum settings.) It already includes the file for loading the whole thing into virtual memory.

The main interest is the addition of some nice choral sounds and different kinds of strings (violins, cellos, basses) played with different articulations. There are other sounds too, though. It could use more work in terms of naming, organizing and effects, but I'm not sure when I will have time for that, while this stuff is quite usable right now.

I would appreciate if someone (Sharp?) hosted this in on a real website. Those free file services drop like flies.

Edit: changed the link to Mega, since the old free file hosting died a long time ago.

And while I'm here, I'll add the link to the demo I made:

Thanks for this.

Why don't you open a DropBox account or any similar Cloud account? They do not lapse if not used.

I wouldn't recommend downloading this until you change where it downloads from. It just downloaded several programs with the download. I deleted everything.

If this is a safe file there are other places to make it available.

Worked fine for me... I have adblock on my browser, perhaps you mistakenly clicked on one of the ads? There's a "download this file" button right below the url and embed code; that's what you want. Then enter the captcha and you should be good to go.

Any chance for a mirror? The download stops after a while even with jdownloader and is not resumeable for me.

Hi. How do these sounds compare to the karo orchestral expansion other than it's free?

Thanks

Any bank with the suffix _UserBank is one that will use virtual memory and stream from the SSD. The KSC file that doesn't have _UserBank at the end is the one to use when you want to edit the sample content.

You would think such a short sample wouldn't take 2 hours to complete but it did. Here is a sample of this Orchestral Set by Sharp and Gambler.

Thanks Gambler/Sharp!

I'm still trying to understand how everything is organized and loaded with regard to user sample sets; I'm having trouble finding clear instructions on how to load something like this in the parameter guide. I loaded the pcg file with the orchestral KSC and it looks like the samples are in RAM now and it kicked out some factory samples. Should I load the _user bank.KSC, then the pcg, then set _user bank.KSC to auto-load in order to stream the samples from the SSD?

I was wondering if someone could recommend a sample library similar to this that i could buy. these patches sound quite good, especially the brass, but I'd be willing to pay for something with more articulations, timbres, etc. something a little more complete and ready-to-go. Neither Legendary Strings nor the Karo sets sounds realistic to me; I think this (sharp/gambler) set sounds more realistic than them. I'm not looking for "pop" orchestral sounds (Kronos does this OK) but more of an accurate orchestral sound to replace strings, brass, etc, in a pit orchestra setup. I play cello and brass professionally, so I can tell right away when something sounds "off." What else is there other than LS and Karo?

You don't need to load KSC manually. Just set it up for auto-load and then click "Do Auto-Load" button. That will get it into virtual memory.

Then you simply load the PCG file.

...

I'm still working on the library. Tweaking mutisamples takes the most time. Maybe I'm missing something, but even trivial actions like normalizing volume requires cycling through every single assigned sample, selecting it via start-end, then selecting the appropriate menu option and confirming the dialog - again, and again, and again. I don't get why there is no option to do this on the entire multisample at once. Heck, operations like max volume normalization and mapping samples to keys could be fully automated.

Once I'm done with fundamental stuff, I'll start improving the programs.
