When I insert a newly formatted 8 GB in my SOS, it says I have unused capacity of 755 minutes, which is about what you would expect at 10 MB per minute. However, as soon as I record anything, eg a few seconds of speech via the onboard mike, the available time halves to about 379 minutes.

I wonder if this is to do with the fact that the SOS automatically records in stereo, so the available time display measures minutes of stereo recording - requiring 20 MB per minute. It's still odd that it switches from one measure to the other and that this is not mentioned in the product literature, which talks repeatedly about a 2 GB card giving 200 minutes of recording time.

I'm not complaining, by the way, 379 minutes on one card is quite enough for me. I would just like to have an explanation. I thought I was mad or the unit was malfunctioning initially!

Did you format the card in the menu? Maybe that sets the card up for the SOS recording.
