My Korg manual lists my D16XD as a +4 device. I understand that commercial, prosumer and consumer products are rated differently (+4, 0, -10), but I'm a little confused on the application of each. My powered monitors (Dynaudio) list these 3 choices (+4, 0, -10) on the back, so that you can choose based on the equipment you have them hooked up to.

What I don't understand is that since the Korg is rated +4, shouldn't the output of the Dynaudios be lowest at the +4 setting? Why would you boost the power for a higher output device?

Also, what would be the negative side effects of running a device at the wrong setting, besides volume issues? Is there a sonic degradation from this?

Dave

I think the key you need to know is that +4 is a balanced input and -10 is usually unbalanced. A balanced input would need a XLR (microphone is-40 dB) connection or the 1/4 Tip Ring Sleeve connection as featured from the inputs and outputs of the D16XD. one tip is positive the ring is negative and the sleeve is the ground.
Direct connection using a -10 1/4 unbalanced plug would not have too much signal degradation. some fancy connections allow unbalanced plugs to fit right in without much noise. Just adjust the gain using the pad 26dB button.
You should match your +4 output signals with +4 Monitors. Since your dealing with amplification. The signal is actually corrected. one device would be inversed... I'm unsure where 0 dB would be... but just turn your Korg device low and your amp fixed to a reasonable setting... then gradually turn up the Korg till you reach a 0 dB gain on the amp's input. NO RED... clipping signals/amps can cause damage.(most really high voltage could)
I'm not talking about impedance or ohms... Use common sense and read anything you can..
ps watch out phantom power.
