When it involves a MIDI device on any of the Thru box Outs that requires power at the device's Input that's where TRS-MIDI splitter solution actually breaks down. I have a MIDI solutions box that will cause weird behaviors with the other device on the other side of the split due to voltage/resistance drop. Some devices are OK with low powered voltages at their In but some aren't. It's worth trying however but if you get missed messages or just a totally unresponsive device do the Thru box.
