Now I don't know if I have something setup wrong or if there is a glitch but when I am using styles I find that if I use ending 3 after the ending is meant to have finished the drums and bass all kick back in again. One of the styles I notice this on is Bigger Band in the Jazz Section, using ending 3 with this you get the style ending and then the drums and bass start playing the last chord you hand held ?

I have Memory selected but when I choose other styles this does not happen?

Anyone else notice this please ?

Hi Mintjamman, I just tried this on my PA4x and I can't replicate the problem that you outlined. The only suggestion/guess that I have is to make sure that you are not accidentally retriggering the drums by your left hand chord after the ending has finished (easy to do if you have the synchro start button selected and you re-play the chord or even a note of the chord). The easiest way to test if that is the problem/cause, is to turn that synchro button off and see if the ending still plays (I bet that it won't). If that doesn't solve it, then the only other thing that I can think of would be a faulty (or over sensitive) start/stop pedal. I can't really explain why the problem appears to be only with one style unless this particular style has a few beats of silence at the end, which still detect chord changes, despite the style appearing as if it has ended.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Jon

Does it repeat the ending? Be careful you don't press the ENDING twice else it will loop.
Also, the ENDING3 is usually very short so make sure your hands are off the keys else the style will kick in again.

Cheers

Hi Guys, thanks for the ideas,

Yes I always have synchro on start, chord memory on mostly,

The thing is that I have chord scanning set to lower only, now if I press ending 3 on the style in question I want to play a Right Hand Part along with the ending on that style. Something odd is happening I will go back and check things today and report back

Ok as I said I would go away and have another look at this issue, I have made a short video of this now available at https://youtu.be/AynuzGkp3RQ

You can see in the first part I have Synchro Start selected and it appears to be random if the style actually stops after Ending 3 is selected, nothing else is being played on the Pa4x keyboard wise. In the second part Synchro is not selected it is just the start/stop being used.

Hi Mintjamman, I've just tried this on my keyboard and have the following observations/findings, which will, I hope, explain the phenomenon you are seeing with the style endings.

What I've observed is that the style endings work like this:

a) When a style is playing and you press any of the endings (1,2 or 3) of that style (FYI, this works for all styles and endings, not just the particular style and ending that you mentioned in your original post) then the ending will play and the style will completely stop once the ending has finished (and will not automatically start again on its own, unless, of course, you have the Synchro start button switched on AND you play another chord or note).

b) When a style is NOT playing, however, and you press any of the endings (1,2 or 3) of that style and then start the style by pressing the start-stop button (or by using the synchro button and then playing a chord/note in the left hand) then the selected ending will play and once it has finished playing the style will automatically continue to play (the particular variation you currently have selected).

Even though, having looked very quickly, I couldn't see any reference in the manual, to the above scenarios, I personally think that the way that they are working makes 100% sense to me for the following reasons:

I think that generally, if no style is playing, it would be fair to assume that if a particular ending is selected, that one could reasonably assume that the player would want to use the whole or part of that ending as an 'alternative intro' to a song (quite a useful feature as it gives you 3 extra intro alternatives). Therefore, it makes sense that once that ending (which is being used as an intro, in this scenario) has finished playing OR the player presses a variation button part way through that ending (so that they only use part of it), that the style should automatically continue playing, to avoid gaps in the music.

When the style is already playing however, and the player presses an ending, then, I think that it is reasonable to assume that the player wants to use the ending to actually end the song. Subsequently, in that scenario the style/rhythm automatically ends once the ending has finished playing, which makes sense too.

I hope that this makes sense and that it explains why it appeared to you that the ending sometimes stops and sometimes doesn't. In summary, the difference is merely dependent on whether the style is already playing or not.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Jon

The problem I have and in particular with Ending 1 is that it goes on for too long and often much to long. Is there an option to set this to stop in the logical place without it dragging on.

I'm with Jon on this. I've always been of the view that endings, 1, 2, and 3, are handy as an alternative set of intros. To me, it's a handy feature. Also, I'm not above using an intro or an ending as a 'fill' feature of sorts during a song.Smile

For example, let's say Intro 1 at the beginning of the song, then Intro 2 used to create a bridge (hit Intro 2 twice to loop it while your right hand plays a figure over top of it, if you like). There's no limit to the flexibility of this approach, and it's a big part of the fun you can have with an arranger.

Like anything else, though, you'll need to have the timing down pat, and use your own musical taste and judgment on where to use this in your arrangements.

Best advice is: just play around with it.
