Nice work Waterdrum, love the thread,

most of it is a bit over my head but hopefully I'll be able to understand enough to add a few external triggers which is what I really want to do.
I love the wavedrum, so much potential for hand drummers and this seems like the way to maximise!

I also read an interesting post regarding hacking the info on the wavedrums SD card, they are asking for some collaboration there which you might be able to help with.

http://elephly.net/posts/2013-08-11-hacking-the-wavedrum.html

My mod might take a while as spare time is a bit precious at the moment but slow n steady will get me there.

Cheers!

Hi Toz
welcome to this place ...

hopefully you will have 1 hour of time ... one day (10 mins for the rim only)
its worth it .
imo there are not many modifications in general ,
that are so easy , so fast and Rewarding , esp for handdrummers.
thx for the link , anyway I had already contact with recado .
(google "wavedrum+hack")
Arrow The GLOBAL FILES would be very appreciated Wink

recado has published three descriptions
-about the SD card and the file system,
-the connectors on the mainboard
-and the differences of the firmware

http://elephly.net/tags/wavedrum.html

and here seems to be the red line
firmware upgrades , firmware flashings are very very risky
cannot be done without a special software +++

this is about the same and a bit more than @Midisaron ,@freestok and I have discovered.
esp. the "bootup files" (a dream : Silver goes ORI goes Global )
it is very well documented and can replace @freestoks lost video explanations .

to sum up all information (and downloads)

And while Im at it: Twisted Evil
first time (!) wanna leak something ,
as NYC seems too cold at the moment to post ,
and its prbly not that secret

and : can you find the 5 little differences in this pic ?

Im really very curious about the final results
and hope @howgood will update us on Frankendrums bride Laughing

Cheers man,

I just checked out the links for the PCN editing, that sounds really cool. I liked the idea of the sensitivity upgrade as well especially (I'm not sure if I understood what you were getting at) the reduction in Rim crosstalk as the volume can really spike with rim shots if you are not careful. The Global upgrade definitely sounds like a dream upgrade, would the firmware and algorithms be contained within the SD card?

I'm going to give the external triggers a go for sure, keen to get a foot pedal going on, I also want to create a realistic conga quinto sound and response somehow, maybe by mixing custom conga PCN sounds with the djembe algorithm, that one seems to have a lot more of a realistic slap response to it.

Quick question, after making the trigger input mods are the sensors they hack into disabled? Do they run concurrently or if switched off can they be reactivated?

I'll have a read through your earlier posts and plan a trip to the electronics shop to grab a few plugs and cables.

Cheers,

Toz

until now its a only a dream
I think the algos are programmed to a chip ... and thats it ... no upgrade
maybe one day someone comes around and does it .. (not shure)

that sounds good , there is still so much to test (and talk about)
the Double Algos like Djembe or Conga are a lot determined by pcms
somehow not so much "organic" or "lively" as the Single Algorithms .
needs some editing in edit2 area

they dont get deactivated ... WD works normal mode
piezos in parallel connection are no prob at all .

if you add a preamp/EQ/booster before the rim input jack
rim works normal

only if you add an EQ/booster before external head trigger input jack
the WD head gets insensible
thats an impedance issue
an extra glue on trigger to the drumskin + a booster is a good workaround

in the end :
plug it out and everything is back to normal behaviour

cool , no hurry m8 , but keep us updated

Well after waking up at 4am with wavedrum mods running through my head I gave in to the urge and cracked open my wavedrum... From there things happened a lot quicker than I thought they would.

Despite my highly questionable soldering skills I am now the proud owner of a slightly modified wavedrum with an external rim trigger input. It sounds great, such a clean rim sound, no crosstalk with the head (now that I can actually compare the two). I have a wavedrum mini and I am using the piezo clip from that into the trigger, there are some interesting effects that come through on certain samples that appear as if the clip is also acting as a microphone and transmitting dynamics such as scratches and reverb, very cool and triggers off anything.
Now it is time to go through and create a nice kick sound and a few other foot friendly patches to integrate into my percussion setup. I've also ordered a miniSD cable extension on ebay from a Korean site, $17,00 delivered which i was quite happy about.

One issue I am having is with the grounding, if my hand is touching the rim of the drum the issue stops but otherwise there is a slight high pitched whine. Any suggestions? I used shielded cable (which was stiff and a pain in the ass) but this didn't do the trick.

As soon as I can figure pics I will post.

thats good news , a fast solution 4 am , haha
your soldering action together with 2 coloured shrinking tube looks better than mine ... Laughing

there are so many reasons for noise
my WD does not have a high pitched noise
could you post a small soundfile ?

does it also disappear if you touch the "ground"of your new jack ?
is it all the time or only with a connected external trigger ?
what external triggerpiezo do you use , the MINI-clip ?

some time ago I asked a question in this forum
http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=87821&sid=161a2ad2010bc4561edb30677dff24ff

a few days later I found this Utube :

this vid answered most of my questions , I am pretty shure the looper records everything Wink

I discovered the same "feature" with my modified Silver ,
was only too lazy to make a vid .

@all present and future Wavedrum modders
Arrow the Rim trigger input of a modified WDX
Arrow reacts in the same way as the Mini clip input

the WD can be used as a sound synthesizer module
and get triggered/controlled / audiosequenced
by nearly any audio signal mp3 player , I-Pad , drum sequencer and what not
2 handed editing with an external rhythm pattern is much easier Wink

@Toz
maybe I know the reason for your noise
please PM or better email me

PostPosted: Sun Jan 26, 2014 6:08 pm    Post subject: modding pad input on WD mini Reply with quote

so Waterdrum responded to a youtube vid i made and when I tried to make an account here...I forgot that I already had one from like 2 or 3 yrs ago. Ha.

So anyway, I have been messing around with my WD mini and have decided to destroy its original purpose. I have been running the Korg DS10(nintendo DS cart) through the clip input on the Mini and now I want to try the same thing with the pad part.

I have cracked her open.

What I discover (thanks for the help already here with identifying parts) is a piezo sensor attached by a JST(?) connector to the PCB. I am TOTALLY new to this, so I am wondering if there is a way to either replace this with a 3.55 input; wire audio cords into the existing connector; or wire in some sort of control to have audio trigger the (what I assume is) different voltage being sent to the processor?
Again, 1st time trying anything with a circuit board, so talk to me like a child please. Any help is more than appreciated.

hello HutzC
you can ADD a 3.5mm jack easily
if you have never soldered I suggest you practice with some old junk PCB
or ask a friend (or a repair shop , not much time , should be cheap)
1a)cut the piezocable and solder a Y connection
1b)OR solder to the BOTTOM side of the MINI mainboard (PCP)
....directly to the metal feet of the plastic connector

2a)at the 3.5mm (Stereo) jack connect "ring"and "tip" to the signal (Both !)
2b)OR connect to tip only
(this depends on the Y adapter from which your signal is coming from)
AND of course ... ground to sleeve of the jack

(maybe better use a 1/4 inch Mono Jack)

Volume control is parameter G5 for rim(as I remember)
and none for the head ... so its only the vol.knob of your input source
its the same system as the rim input and reacting in a similar (the same)way

volumes should be manageable ...

just yesterday I connected a self oscillating Monotron Delay to my Rim Triggerinput , crazy stuff
also (again ) playing with a preamped microfone into the rim triggerinput as a form of "Blend&Boost" ... so much of a more realistic sound Smile

This is only to give you some first ideas , if you have more QQQ ... ask

btw : used Silver WDXs are getting cheaper , thats where the "cooler " sounds are ... Wink
(+ an added ribbon controller that works during playback) Wink

Thanks for the help Waterdrum. I have ordered some beginners soldering and electronic kits and a couple beginner level books to get going. Every "mad scientist" has to start somewhere.

It seems that Aquarian now offers their "Inhead skins" in 10 " size.
These skins (+ a converter box) can give out Midi notes.

just an Idea
the integrated force sensitive resistor could be used for pressure information
(and replace the original WD sensor ?)

)

@HutzC
my favourite "mad scientist" Wink

@saurabh
I am shure , once you open the WD you will understand it ...

remove the black adhesive tape
you see a blue cable ( at the very left),
this is where you solder the ground(shield, earth ,in German "Masse")
of your new cable and of your 1/4 inch jack.
the 2nd (red) cable is "signal"..... (the tip contact of the jack) ..thats all

There are a lot of images and videos that have been lost posted i this thread. I think it's important to rescue these, to continue this fantastic legacy of wavedrum modding.

If someone has them available, it would be of great help to us others late to the Wavedrum game - thanks! Smile

Also, I'm very curious how waterdrums further mods are progressing after these years!

Hi everybody,
i'd be interested in modding the wavedrum to add an expression pedal.
Most pictures on this topic are gone,
can someone please explain how to do it ?

First thing i notice is nobody posted videos of the results...or they're gone as well as the topic is quite old. In the mean time, this is clearly some of the most interesting mods to do on the wavedrum...

so...anybody still here and willing to help ?
