^ This video I show how the oscillator generates these special waveforms called step waves. You can turn harmonics on/off at different feet intervals.
Is it additive synthesis? |

Hi,
Thanks for sharing the video. It is an interesting synth with a synthesis approach I saw for the first time.
The set up of the DCO oscillator is indeed a kind of primitive additive synthesis. Primitive in the sense of: you can not have fine granularity over the amplitude and phase of the different steps. It is also only 4 steps.

Hi OpAmp,
Yes - very primitive and basic. I think Additive is more about combining sine waves - and as you said being able to have control over granularity. |

Hi,
Indeed you are right. Additive synthesis typically uses sine waves.
But on the Poly800 you're adding squares, so it is additive But hey, a square wave on itself can also be seen as a sum of sines
The nice thing about the squares is that, although there are only 4 stops to play with on the synth, the resulting waveform has quite a number of harmonics. Playing with only 4 sinewaves would sound a bit thin.
Have fun. _________________ microKORGXL, Kaossilator Pro, monotribe, SQ-1, volca fm, Kross 88 BK
