I am in combi mode, track 1 piano for a few bars. Track 2 has strings at zero vol. My question is how can preset a level for track 2 and bring it up instantly
Thanks for any insight

Well i found one way, just keep track 2 muted until needed. Any other suggestion. I have had this board for a couple years now and I keep finding most of the limitations are from my side.
Anyway thanks

Select Timbre mode and use the second slider to fade them in and out. But you must be in that mode. There are other ways but this might suffice.

The Vector Joystick could be used to vary the volume of a Program, or Programs in a Combi. There are many example e.g. Combi I-A064 Piano & Constant Voices.

Karma scene features allow for turning on and off timbres as well as select groups of timbres in any way of combined timbres you like.
Using Karma switches to do it of course. Takes a little time to set it all up and even longer if you get creative with the scene mix. Timbres get turned on and off with all their individual settings intact.

Follow the good man's video there for some tricks of the trade.

He has another video doing the same thing in Sequencer mode but involving track looping as well. https://youtu.be/hx0OUOgihAs

I use the volume pedal to bring strings in and out as needed. The pedal can be assigned to any sound(s) per combi preset.
