|
|
My KRONOS 88 LS is on the way to my home!
I need some advice from the best users here about some questions:
1) can I add as secondary SSD a Samsung SSD EVO PRO 512Gb that is a sata3-6Gb drive?
2) can I also use another Samsung SSD EVO PRO 512Gb as a primary internal HDD (after cloning the factory HDD or installing OS and stuff from the factory DVDs)?
And then need some advice about the absolutely MUST EXs (brand, title and EX s number) thinking that im' interested on movie scoring, synphonic orchestra, human choirs, acoustic instruments (guitar nylon and steel, cello, violin, harp), drums, timpani and cinematic hits, ethnic percussions (taiko and other big drums), electric basses, EPs and the best collection of Hammonds sounds.

Obiously... i'll post my opinion about the keybed (but i'm a synth-like/hammond like player... not a hammer-action-ist)
Anyway... why is so difficult get some CLEAR advice about the SSDs on this machine???
SSD sata 3 EVO Pro... as secondary AND primary HDDs... we can... or we cannot???!!!

Nobody? | Adding a second is easy. Why would you bother changing the first one on your brand new system? Of course you can. You just need to clone your old one but I don't see the need. _________________ Kronos 2 73 |

The internal HD as it is stock with Latest Kronos is enough to handle more than all the content you could possibly fit in every Bank in Kronos. That is program banks, combi banks, song banks, drum pattern banks, GE banks, sample banks and more.
You have RAM and ROM doing memory work everytime you are loaded up after power on, and those are already max possible capacity for Kronos system.
The internal HD/ssd is sectioned into parts that do vitirtual memory to pick up the slack of RAM where allowed and also parta that do general file storage.
But then you have external USB drive ports that can take USB drive. You can store overflow on external and move files into the internal SSD as you need them. Loading files onto kronos at Power up requires that the files be on the internal SSD, so that means external drive has limitations.
It is hard to require all 60GB in a single power up load unless you are all stocked up with every huge sample based program available for krons, like the 5GB sample based Piano program. And you will reach the RAM limits before reaching the SSD limits.
So replacing all SSDs for 500gb pair of Samsungs, is not a waste of time because internal memory is more convenient than external memory. But the real question is how convenient will the extensive SSD replacement be, including the cloning job? I am wondering if increased SSD capacity can add to the virtual memory capacity in Kronos? Not really sure how that works.
Any way, if you have all your memory maxed out internally, you may never have to worry about using the USB ports for too much except for getting in the content it would take to fill a 1TB internal memory capacity.
I wouldn't want less than a 1TB internal storage space computer for DAW/VST work station, so i can't say that wanting 1TB internal SSD for Kronos is any different, but in the case of Kronos, there are only so many banks of anything you can fill in a load up and it is no where near as many as you can have going in a DAW/VST system with a hoard of plugins that can each have up to a bank of well over 10,000 sounds(omnisphere).
Kronos has a sample bank potential of 16,000 slots, depending on the sample size+refrencing scheme and pairing scheme of the samples, but at minimum, it is 4,000 slots of stereo samples. Next is Karma GE bank capacity and that is around a few thousand or less, then followed by programs and Combis which are less than 2000 in all banks combined.
I know i can play kronos sounds directly from internal or external drive via disk mode, but i think that is only for sounds loaded into memory at power on. Not sure what happens if i try to play sounds from internal disk mode.
I load everything i have when i power on and that is not enough to max out the load capacity of Kronos. I think 60Gb internal is enough storage for enough content to max out the load capacity of Kronos.
But 1TB is still very useful for song collections, multiple load sets and Huge wave files or samples. I wave file/sample audio books, music and documentaries/lectures off of the internet and listen back to them on Kronos when there is poor to no internet connection or even just to keep from having to hold my iPad or run the battery down just to take in something that works just as well as audio from a kronos wave file in disk mode. Of course i store and play back wave files from external drive in disk mode. |

Hi Naia, on YT there is a video of a Kronos user who added a 2nd and a 3rd (via sata/usb adapter) 500Gb SSD.
Big samples collection, songs, 16 audio tracks, and a big EXs collection needs big hdd room, and a big SSD is the best way to do this.
Many things aren't "preloaded" in ram and you can load them at your call (and a big and fast SSD is the fastest way to do that, expecially if you need to streaming samples or other sounds directly from disk).
I can agreed with you about replacing the primary internal hd (it's a complex task, but non impossible even restoring the system from the factory DVDs), but a secondary BIG SSD to me is mandatory and the USB is not the best nor the right way.
