So I want one of these for my 61-key Kronos.

You can't seem to just buy one without buying a whole new desk, and I don't want to replace my desk, so I'm wondering, has anyone ever built one before? What's the best or easiest means of constructing one?

how would you keep all the cables intact ? Due to the back and forth movement ?

I think just giving them a little slack and securing them out of the way of snagging on anything should be okay. It's really just a USB, 2 balanced phone cables, a damper and an IEC. The phone cables are the only really fragile cables, but I think they will be fine.

I would secure the cables to the Kronos somehow- to help keep them in place, as you slide the keyboard back and forth.

I was thinking taping them to the back part of the drawer so there's no movement near the plugs. I can't stand messy cables and wires. I usually find some way of keeping them out of sight and taped or velcro'd.

Many ways to build a slide out tray. Weight of the Kronos must be considered. You don't want it bouncing around. No sense re-inventing the wheel however. I'd look at current models to see what they used. Perhaps visit the local HomeDepot, maybe a local cabinet company, etc. See what kinds of sliders they recommend for the weight. (Remember, you will be playing it too, so consider the extra stress involved)

As to the cables, there are a number of ways to bundle them securely (keep AC cables separate) and a number of methods to attach them to the base of the drawer itself. Lot's of little clamps designed to do just that job.

They also make lightweight springs (think old fashioned screen door) that will keep the excess cable from flopping around.

Interesting project. Good luck.

When I revamped my studio, I hung a pair of Accuride Sliders (DZ5517-60) to each side of the drawer/cabinet units.

The sliders have a lip to mount a shelf on - But because of the weight of the Kronos 88, I also reinforced the MDF shelf with Steel angle to stop any bending.

I've not yet got round to screwing in some cup hooks underneath to keep the cables tidy and out of the way.

It works perfectly, very pleased with the result.
