Is it possible to build a combi that accesses both ext and int programs? For example, could I build a 'piano and strings' combi that uses a Kronos string program and a piano from Native Instruments stored on my PC?

Yes, it's very possible. You just want your NI setup to not respond on the Kronos global channel. (If it does, then you're going to hear the NI sounds all the time, even when not in that combi.)

In the combi timbre, you can select EXT2 if you want to send bank select MSB/LSB along with a program change message. Select the MIDI channel that NI is responding to and you're done.

Thanks for this question 4GodnWV!
Can I ask some question which agonize me (sorry because I add this to your subject 4GodnWV, I mean that it is very similar).
I use Kurzweil like controller to Kronos X. How I can use combi from Kronos and add sound from Kurzweil to it (to combi)?
How I can record combi from Kronos (on Kronos) with sound from Kurzweil? Thanks in advance!

Pedja,

Here's a link to a thread discussing external timbres in a combi:

Hope this helps,

Voxg, et al,

Sorry I wasn't more clear in my original question. Can I route the signal to my PC? I understand that if it were another midi keyboard I could use a midi cable, but I only have USB on my PC.

Can I build a combi that utilizes the USB out on my Kronos?

Let me pose a different scenario. Is it possible to build a combi with 3 timbres:
1. Int - Kronos program
2. Ext - (let's say Roland) program [I assume I'd use a midi cable here]
3. Ext - Omnisphere program located on my PC

Again, I apologize for any lack of clarity in posing my question(s) I just can't seem to wrap my head around this technology. Old dog trying to learn a new trick.

Thanks 4GodnWV for a link,
Yes in same way it's help, but not complete.
I have my_combi, it contain:

1. (on MIDI #1) Piano PRG from Kronos,
2. (on MIDI #2) Violin PRG from Kurzweil (controller for Kronos).

If this is ok, I can save it like my_combi, play and record it. In record file I will have to have piano sound from my Kronos and violin sound from my Kurzweil? Am I correct with this?
Where I can change MIDI for timbre in combi mode?
Excuse me for my very beginner questions about that. I don't have experience with MIDI. Thanks again!

P. S. I changed question because of some confusions! I hope that it is more clear now.
Thanks for your attention.

Pedja,

Sorry, but someone else will have to address your issue. I am having trouble understanding the proper steps myself.

There are some smart cookies in this box. I am confident that many here know how to do this. Not so sure I'll understand what they are trying to tell me, lol

Good luck to both of us.

One way of doing 1, 2 and 3, without specifically using dedicated Combis, would be to connect the Roland external instrument from Kronos MIDI out to Roland MIDI in. If, for example, both Kronos timbre and Roland hardware are set to MIDI Gch, they will both produce sounds with Kronos as the controller. Connecting a laptop or PC with Omnisphere installed, to the Kronos' B-type (square) USB connector, after first installing the Korg MIDI driver, will bring the Kronos up as an available MIDI controller in the host software being used for Omnisphere. Once Kronos is selected as a MIDI device in the host, Omnisphere, too, should sound when the Kronos is played. So, now there are three audio sources that need to be mixed together, or recorded on separate audio channels.

How this is done is up to the user. There are several options, but this is a topic best left to a separate posting if further information is required.

voip,

Thank you so very much for your answer. I currently have my K2 at the church, where I use it live for worship svcs.

Just purchased a PC and some NI software (along with a S61 Mk2 keyboard) - currently have that set-up at home, learning to use it. Next step is to add a DAW and then Omnisphere 2).

Eventually (probably a few months) I want to merge the PC set-up with my K2, and that's where the real fun begins. I hope to be able to get more 'how-to" info from this thread at that time. For now, I just want to make sure that I "can do" what I am dreaming of.
