1st failed boot could be a result of a less than perfect prior shut down.

I would shut down in program mode just to eliminate that cause.

It really should not fail at first cold start, however.

Does "first boot" mean the first after a long off period?

And the third boot?

Does it happen with everything unplugged (apart from the power cable, of course)?

Check the mains power cable is good, and firmly plugged in.

Nothing plugged in the USB slots and the power cable is firmly in.
I'm not too concerned because it always boots up second time and it is then faultless and I don't gig.

Bit strange though.

The K is touchy with power.

If it were mine, and its new I would leave it on for at least 4 hours per day for a few weeks.
Theory being that if a part or component is flakey, it will fail soon.

There have been cases of a faulty power supply. Thats not an easy DIY IMO.

Thanks.

Just popped downstairs and it started first time.
I'll see how it goes this week.

There could be a temperature sensitive component at fault. It needs to reach a particular operating temperature before it will work properly. When you first turn on the Kronos for the first boot, the component is too cool to work. But when you try the second time, it has heated up enough to work.

If this is the case, sooner or later it will probably fail completely.

Is this something that showed up when cooler Winter temps started?

I used to diagnose these sorts of failures all the time using cooling spray and/or a heat gun to isolate the failing component.

We've had discussions about this recently,

here are my comments about this in the recent thread after quoting Busch,

There is something about the Kronos 2 with the new motherboard where this is a more common issue, I think. I had an original Kronos and I very, very rarely ran into this but with my Kronos 2 I've seen this 3-4 times in my first weeks of ownership. I really don't think it's the RAM or power. Power has never been an issue in the past and I doubt it is now. I suspect it's getting unhung with something during start up, likely USB related. I have one USB going into an iConnecivity mio10 and the other is an Apple USB network adapter.

Busch.

I'm still thinking it's power related, and maybe the nature of a different switch mode power supply in the Kronos 2. I've had the issue lately too, where when I first turn on after it being off for a longer period of time, (like overnight), it would happen. I notice the HDD light would remain lit from the first instance the power was switched on, and remain so, then the error message would appear a few seconds later.
When switched off and on again, all was ok. Also if I powered off for a short while then on again, it wouldn't happen.

It was the fact that the HDD light was permanently on from the first instance which twigged me to a possible "unclean" power up. I had recently swapped out the standard power lead for a slightly lighter version along with a different electrical power board, thinking that the Kronos being only 60W shouldn't be a problem, but what I didn't take into account was the higher current inrush when first powering up as the power supply capacitors charged up. For me, this would explain the successful re-power within a short period of time, and the fact that when it failed, a restart would be successful, as the current inrush was much less, and a clean power up occurred.

My domestic power supply is excellent, and I do have a UPS as a backup during storms. I've not had the boot-up error while using the UPS

I know it is a generic error message, and it seems to me that at what point the error message occurs, and noticing the behaviour of other indicators, such as the HDD, and without diagnostic info, helps to pinpoint the area of boot-up the problem occurs. In my instance, pretty fundamental power stability.

Satori...from the description of your house electrical wiring behaviour, I would say unstable power for sure. A UPS would be a good start!

Chris

It definitely seems to occur more in colder temps, as it is summer here, and I haven't had it happen for a while. I wondered originally if it was a suspect temperature related connector termination, but there appears to be commonality between different Kronos, making this less likely.

Thanks for all your input.
I turned the auto fan to off and auto off switch off in Global last night and this morning it booted first time. That's the first time it has started first try in the morning since I've owned it.
Maybe a fluke but if it remains an intermittent problem I'll have to send it back.
Fingers crossed.

But now it failed second time.

Never mind. Looks like its going back.

I agree with your return. We have to hope this was a 1 off or sporadic failure.

Worst case, is a bad batch of a component(s) which is in the assembly process.
Korg does not actually manufacture the common components inside- they acquire them for later assembly. Its difficult to be 'perfect ' every time with the complexity of a device such as our Kronos.

Shops swapping it for a new one.
They were superb.

I hesitate to post things like this because it can feed a negative perspective.
No way have I lost faith in this magnificent machine.

Good to hear that it's quite an investment. I had a computer do me like that about 2 years ago.
