I had always considered myself a luck Kronos owner. I was one of the first to receive the 73 and worked flawlessly since July. I upgraded to 1.5 when it came out and everything worked fine for a few weeks. But yesterday I turned it on and got a startup failure. I called support and they told me to do a restore. I had to go my local 24 hour walmart to get a DVD drive yesterday, but the restore worked.

A little scary and certainly frustrating. Not really sure what caused it--which concerns me because it may happen again.....

is that the only way to do it? from an external DVD drive?

I wonder if it would be possible to put the files from the restore DVD onto a flash drive and load it like that...

The tech person told me it has to be DVD, not USB thumb drive. which strikes me as wierd since it is a USB connected DVD drive.

it was unfortunate that i had to go buy one. i purchased one from walmart for $40 but took it back the next day. they have much cheaper ones on amazon.

since it happened once it may happen again, so i would rather have a spare dvd drive just in case

To bad I don't have kronos to try this with. Here's a free program that will copy your dvd along with the boot loader onto a usb stick. Probably needs to be formated with FAT32 before you copy it. http://anyutilities.blogspot.com/2009/11/copy-bootable-cd-and-dvd-to-usb-flash.html That's the site I found it at. Here's the direct link. http://wintoflash.findmysoft.com/ Try this before you have to run out and get a usb/cd drive. I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work. Let me know.

I will try it. I'm not going to reinitialize the kronos again but I will at least see if the screen will come up from the usb stick

Thanks

just looked at the program and I'm searching out more information about MBR(masterbootrecord) and linux based systems. The wintoflash program has preset operating systems and linux is not on the list. Not really sure about it now so I'm looking into a different solution. Korgs setup cd could also have some copy protection on it.

I found a current and readily available low cost USB DVD drive that works perfectly with the Kronos. Please read the following thread.

Maybe I'll get a kronos soon and be able to run down some test myself. I would try this first. Using MagicISO to make a .img or .iso image file of the cd with the boot record. Find a program that will then copy the .img or .iso file to usb stick with boot record. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Win32DiskImager -- Something like that. Even though the kronos uses pc components linux is a open source platform. It can be setup to run like a WinXP environment or even down to a 8mb install for a server.
Does your pc even recognize the kronos setup cd? What happens if you try and book your pc from the dvd drive with the kronos cd?

I received a Kronos2-88 in april, it suffered from System startup failed from the first day.

I was in contact with the dealer for several month regarding if there is a solution for this without sending it for service.

It ended up having to be sent in. After one month I got it back with a service note saying that the RAM has been replaced. Three of the keys in two different octaves were messed up like there was no rubber dampening so they made a lot of noise beeing pressed.

I returned it to the shop and got it back after some days with the keys fixex. Plugged it in to start enjoy but after my third power on the error about System startup failed showed up again.

This and also that there is no ASIO-driver so I can use it with a DAW-software (I tried Asio4All but it doesn't work well) makes me quite irritated, to the degree that I don't want to own this synthesizer any more.

Hoping for a refund now.

Edit: Maybe I was a bit too fast and upset. The local store will replace the unit with a new one. I cross my fingers that it will work fine.

Don't bother!
You can't boot from usb in GRUB (Kronos' bootloader) if the bios doesn't allow it.
Besides GRUB configuration had to be changed.
