So I take it if you make changes to a style in its sounds, and store as a songbook entry it doesn't affect the original style ?

All changes to the styles and saved to the SongBook, doesn't affect the original style.

If the style is moved from say user slot1 to user slot2 will the songbook entry not work?

Correct - it will not work - the SONGBOOK entry is merely a "pointer" to the original style location.
