The following details are for the TR Rack, not the Triton Rack. The posting after this one deals with the latter.

Page 17 onwards of the TR Rack User Guide explains the procedure in reasonably small steps. It would be quite a challenge to try to simplify it any further, though in the last paragraph below there is a numbered breakdown of the things you need to do.

But first things first. Select Combi mode, choose the required Combi, then press Edit, then follow the procedure in the User Guide for changing one of the 8 timbres in the Combi to one of the Programs classed as a drum Program. Drum Programs are specific in that they have a different sound assigned to each key. The majority of Programs are not drum Programs but are one or two oscillator multisample-based, which play the same basic sound across the keyboard but at a different pitch for each key.

When choosing a suitable Program, bear the following in mind. The TR Rack Voice Name List shows the key mappings for the different drumkits i.e. which key is assigned to which percussive sound. Each of the 24 drum kits are themselves Programs scattered amongst the 512 Programs in the TR Rack, e.g. A072 "Percussion Kit", A104 "Bass Drums & Snares", B040 "Psycho Kit", and are indicated by a lower case "d" in the Voice Name List.

Page 74 of the User Guide has some useful info relating to drum Programs.

So basically, referring to the manual for the actual detail, in Combi Edit, do: 1) decide which timbre in the Combi should be assigned to the drumkit, 2) select a drumkit Program for that Timbre, 3) choose the MIDI channel and 4) keyboard zone with which to play the drumkit, 5) use Transpose to "move" the percussive sounds being played so that the wanted sounds fall into the selected keyboard zone, 6) adjust the Timbre volume, 7) set the velocity range (zone) over which the drum sounds will play. Add effects if necessary.

OK, now for the Triton Rack. The Triton Rack Basic Guide page 51 is the place to refer to. For the built-in drum Programs in the Triton Rack, the fundamental principles and steps are the same as in the previous posting, but the menu structure is slightly different, and the drum type Programs are in different locations e.g. Program A004 "!(Tricky Kit)!", A020 "House Kit", and so on. Viewing the Programs by category i.e. drums, will speed up finding them, and the Triton Rack Voice Name List lists them, with a helpful circled "d" to locate them in the Program list.

If the intention is to sample your own drum sounds, and incorporate them into a Combi, then the first thing that would need to be done is the relatively complex procedure of creating a Program based on those drum samples. It will need a good read of the Sampling section of the Triton Rack Basic Guide, starting on page 65, with a good brew, and a few hours to spare ;-)
