I recently looked at some interesting FX apps for the iPad and thought, wouldn't it be cool if you could connect an iPad to the Kronos through USB and be able to send sounds to it for processing and then back! As far as I can tell, that's not possible...right? I see no way to send audio from the Kronos out of the USB port, only in.

Kronos USB audio out is there, but needs to be setup on the target device. There are no Global, or any other settings that need to be made, as such, apart from maintaining the correct audio levels. As an example, in Ableton Live: Driver Type - MME/DirectX, Audio Output Device - SigmaTel Audio DX. There is a delay, however, so beware. The delay can be managed up to a point by tweaking output buffer size. Folks tend to prefer S/P DIF for a digital audio out, for this reason, but that's not an option on the iPad, I guess. Care needs to be taken when Audio Ins and Outs are involved, to prevent feedback issues which, because of the delay, tend to sound rather chattery/buzzy, so may not be immediately identifiable as feedback.

That’s encouraging. Can you select the individual outputs or is it just the L/R?

In Global, Audio, switching the L/R bus individual assign between Off (i.e. L/R) and 1/2 and 3/4 audio outs, does not glitch, or change the sound character through USB audio, suggesting that the USB audio out is tied to the L/R bus. The USB audio coming into the Kronos can, of course, be routed several ways.
