Why does this have to be yet another huge ordeal? I've been programming synths since 1974. I programmed professionally for Sound Source Unlimited in the 90's. I understand that machines as powerful as the Kronos can get complicated..but why must every other ordinary function take ten times longer to figure out than with any other machine I've worked with? Can I use knob 8 to change portamento time in a combi, or not?

After three hours or so I finally got knob 8 to control portamento time in program mode... It was nice while it lasted. Now it doesn't work...and I haven't changed a thing that would affect it...either in the pitch common page or the controller page. It worked with Karma turned on or off. And now it doesn't..

Of course while it was working in program mode it wouldn't work in combi mode...even with the tone adjust on and set to the right slot and the knob set to the same function as made it work in program mode.

So far I haven't found anyone with a search of this site or a google search who can tell me how to do this simple function..or if it's even possible...even though the manual indicates it is.

The Kronos has been my main ax since 2011. I'm ready to check out Yamaha's latest flagships. The EX5 was the best value in flagships that I've ever seen...short of the Rhodes Chroma, which blew the competition away in 1982. I still have my Chroma..and three EX5s. Even without a touch screen the EX5 interface is much superior to the Kronos. All the functions are where they should be...not hidden in "Karma"..or convoluted..like this knob 8 fiasco. It is a simple matter to assign any applicable function to a knob. Now that Yamaha has caught up with touch screens their long standing over all superiority will probably draw me back. It's just a matter of whether I want to spend the time duplicating the sounds and setups that I've spent hundreds of hours developing on the Kronos.

Make sure the EXi portamento AMS MIDI CC# is the same as what is selected for the particular knob under Basic/Controllers (under EXi 1 and/or 2, Osc/Pitch, Pitch).

In your case, Knob Mod #21 at the two places. You could change both to #83 as well, etc. I have a custom program which does a similar thing, I have edited it quite a bit with time and still works just fine.

I assign portamento to switch one. Of course that won’t work for you if you’re wanting to change the time/rate on the fly.

I used the AL-1 engine. Go to the Program P4: Basic/Vector Tab and select "Controllers". Select Knob 8 and go to the 7th selection down which is "Portamento Time (CC#5)" & choose it. Now go to P4 OSC/Pitch and go to the Pitch Common Tab. Enable portamento and you should be good to go. No need to enter any value here. It appears the knob 8 assignment handles this. Be sure to "Write" your edits and understand that you cannot write edits to GM patches, so you would have to find a new empty location.

I was successful in assigning portamento on and off to switch two. That's better than nothing. Also it was simple to assign portamento time to the foot controller (CC4), since it can be selected directly. I will try the suggestions here and see if I need to continue my rant. I want time on knob 8!

The Kronos has been my main ax for eight years because I only use the best. I own two for my studio and gigs that I can drive to. I just wish some parameters were organized better.

Oh...and tune up the CX3 engine! The sound of out of tune drawbars wavering has been driving me nuts since I first realized a long time ago that that's what I was hearing. I have two actual CX3s and the drawbars are in tune.. so I know it's possible!

Well folks, after five hours or so I stumbled on the solution by trying different control assignments in the Control Surface page of the Play parameters. My discovery was confirmed by the Parameter Guide:

"I 0–9e: RT/KARMA (Real Time
Knobs/KARMA)
This Control Assign setting lets you modulate
Program, Combi and Effects parameters with the eight
knobs, and control KARMA with the switches and
sliders."

Korg could have probably saved me around 4 hours and 45 minutes if in the Pitch Common/Portamento Time/AMS section of the manual (4-4b) they had put simply: "For a knob to control portamento time RT/KARMA must be selected on the front panel under Control Assign, or on the Control Surface page of the Play parameters."

Thanks to all who made suggestions.

On to the next debacle.

Glad you discovered the Real Time abilities of the Control Surface, sorry it was a long and painful process. Hopefully these tips will not only save you headaches in the future but also encourage to command more of the Kronos' powerful flexibility. Perhaps for future readers as well this will demystify the left side of the Kronos.

So I guess my suggestions about the "Controllers " tab didn't work for you?
