I've changed from a Yamaha MX61 to a KORG M50, and one thing I've noticed, is that the M50 is extremely loud even with the volume slider at the very first bar. And when I use a sustain pedal, there's audible clipping when I overlap several notes.

This is not a problem on my MX61, so I assume there's some internal setting that needs adjusted?

The M50's output level is quite "hot". What is the setup being used? Headphones, PA, HiFi system? Could it be the audio system being used is overloaded? For me, with headphone listening, the main volume slider is rarely above the first or second marker on the scale printed next to it.

I'm using headphones. What's odd is that my Yamaha MX61 can have many more sounds on and be louder, with no audible clipping. Even with the volume slider at minimum, there's clipping when I put my foot on the sustain pedal and play a chord or two.

If there is distortion when using headphones, with the volume set very low, then that doesn't seem right. It might be down to a hardware issue, but it is probably worth doing a factory reset first. Save any custom Programs or Combis first.

Sorry for the late reply, got sucked into a bunch of stuff. Just tried the reset, lost a few sound presets, and the clipping is actually worse now. Is there some sort of internal amplification effect?

Oddly, it's the left headphone that puts out the most clipping. It's not an issue with the headphones either, as my MX 61 functions just fine with much louder volume settings and more sustained keys, as does listening to loud power metal from my computer.

Edit: Oddly enough, if I go to the Sequencer page, set the first instrument to the program I want to play, then go to the mixer and set the midi volume down from 127 to ~45, there's no clipping even when the volume slider on the keyboard is much higher, and the audio output is also louder.

From the behaviour described, it does seem that any further investigation will require specialist knowledge and equipment to narrow down which of the several places that distorted sound could be introduced, are actually causing the problem. It could be the mute circuit, tone generator, DAC, buffers, memory devices, power supplies. This is probably a job for a keyboard repair technician.

Has there ever been any liquid spilt on this keyboard?
