My understanding is that they are no different to any other samples - just different in the way they are delivered.
Eg. Acoustic Guitar - certain samples only sound when you play legato (already have other keys down) - this is assigned by the Trigger Mode in Sound Menu, Basic, Osc Basic, Osc Trigger Mode. Others use different Trigger Modes like Sound Controller 1.
Sometimes also these samples are in a restricted velocity range so they only trigger occasionally.
