Hi all. 3 week owner and having a blast. I play a lot of manual bass.\ I have set up a bunch of splits with bass as voice 4. That gives me control of the bass octave (which seems not to be changeable in accompaniment) and other benefits. I’m having an issue where every time I turn split on, chord scan is also toggled on. I don’t want that in either upper or lower. I’d like to continue playing my split and when desireable, turn on accompaniment (drums/percussion) without the keyboard looking for chords (and trying to add its own bass from accompaniment). I’m not finding a global switch for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on buying this fabulous keyboard.

There is no way that you can disable the scan when pressing the split button but the following options might help you....

OPTION 1 (SONGBOOK selection):-
The PA4X has a redesigned OS (Operating System) compared to previous versions (PA3X,PA2X etc..)
This OS is designed around the use of the SONGBOOK feature.
You can use SONGBOOK to "setup and save" any keyboard configuration.
So any song you setup and save will remember the split etc...

If want SONGBOOK entries to manage the split/scan you need to make sure that the following GLOBAL parameter is set:-

    GLOBAL mode
    Press MENU button
    Select "GENERAL"
    Select LOCK tab
Select on right of screen "CONTROL"
    UNLOCK "KEYBOARD MODE (SPLIT/FULL)
The split/scan will be recalled exactly as when you saved the SONGBOOK entry
This option enables you to have all your songs where you want the split/scan to be on or off etc.

OPTION 2 (STYLE/KEYBOARDSET selection):-
If you are merely playing styles and keyboard sets (not using SONGBOOK) you can do this:-
Set the SPLIT the way you want
    GLOBAL mode
    Press MENU button
    Select "GENERAL"
    Select LOCK tab
Select on right of screen "CONTROL"
    LOCK "KEYBOARD MODE (SPLIT/FULL)
The split/scan will be unchanged when you change style or keyboard set.

Hope this helps

Hi Pete. Thanks for this comprehensive reply. Much appreciated. I have tested both of these methods and they work as described. Unfortunately, neither works in this common playing scenario for me:

-I have a piano/bass split with bass as voice 4. Let’s say a light swing or bossa are called up as pattern.
-I start the song with a rubato introduction - full keyboard play
-I then want to start the rhythm and LHB as the start of the in-tempo tune so I press SPLIT.

Unfortunately, in doing this, the CHORD SCAN lights (which I don’t want) and I have to manually turn it off otherwise the keyboard starts playing the pre-programmed bass sound (in the wrong octave) while seeking a chord. What I really want if for rhythm only to start and continue to have just my walking bass and right hand piano. Possible?

Here’s an idea which may help you and you only have to set it up once:-

Scenario:-
a. Song starts with free-hand full piano
b. Then song has free hand bass (leftH) and piano (rightH)
c. Next the song jumps into a style

Setup for scenario “a” and “b”
1. Set GLOBAL>General>Locks>Control KEYBOARD MODE SPLIT/FULL lock to UNLOCKED
2. Set GLOBAL> General>Locks>Style MANUAL BASS lock to UNLOCKED
3. Select style play mode (maybe good idea to select the actual style you want for the song)
4. Select desired piano sound (UPPER1)
5. Select desired bass sound
6. Make sure split/upper-lower scans are OFF
7. Test it (full keyboard piano)!!!!
8. Save as SONGBOOK entry (e.g. called JAZZintro)
9. Edit that SONGBOOK entry and set:-
.....SYNC START to OFF
.....SYNC STOP to OFF
.....MEMORY to OFF
10. Save (replace) SONGBOOK entry

Setup for scenario “c”
1. Now select the actual style you want for the song to jump into (if not selected earlier)
2. Select the VAR, SOUNDS, volumes etc..etc. exactly as you want to kick it off
3. Test it (style plays instantly as desired)!!!
4. Save as SONGBOOK entry (e.g. called JAZZgroove)
5. Edit that SONGBOOK entry and set parameter:-
.....SYNC START to ON
.....SYNC STOP to OFF
.....MEMORY to ON
7. Save (replace) SONGBOOK entry

Playing the song:-
1. Select SONGBOOK “JAZZintro” – full piano will play (scenario step “a”)
2. Play the piano intro etc
3. Press “Manual Bass” whenever you want to go to scenario step “b”
4. Play the bass and piano part
5. Select the SONGBOOK entry “JAZZgroove” (scenario step “c”)
6. Style will start as soon as you play.

You will find switching SONGBOOK entries much easier if you add them to a SETLIST

Let me know if you need help with that.

Cheers

Thanks Pete. You're a rock star. Setting up two "scenes" as songs was the ticket. I did need to do it a little differently as prescribed as I can't seem to get the manual bass to play in the correct octave (it's always an octave lower than desired, making the lowest notes on the 76 completely out of range). I see tuning/octave adjustments for upper/lower sounds but not the bass. Nonetheless, I'm continuing to use my bass of choice as the lower sound which when split is on, plays my bass sound in its proper range. Of course, I cannot turn on manual bass as then it also adds the style bass (in the wrong octave). So, carefully prescribing two "scenes" as songs in this fashion - one split with bass and auto start enabled allows for a quick transition from all-piano to piano with bass and rhythm started. Changing octave on manual bass would definitely be on a wish list for any future updates (please KORG).

Now, if I could just figure out how to remove the crash cymbal from a fill I'm in business, but that's for another post. Thanks again.

RE: CRASH CYMBAL
Very briefly:-

In STYLE edit
Select the FILL
Select the drum track
Find the exact "crash cymbal" note on the keyboard
Record (as if you were adding some drumming) and let it loop
Press and hold the "Delete Note" and hold the actual note down right through the loop and it should disappear completely.
(if the crash occurs more than once but you only want to remove one iteration, just do the above for the bit of the loop where you want to remove the crash)
Write the style etc...

I'm not at my keyboard but that is approximately how to do it.

RE: BASS OCTAVE
Not sure if this helps but....
STYLE PLAY MODE
MENU>>MIXER/TUNING>>TUNING>>Bass>>Octave Transpose
This of course will change the octave of the bass for the style.

Cheers

Thank you, Pete. I was having such a difficult time getting this to work as the crash cymbal actually programmed was not on the keyboard at all... until I transposed the keyboard a couple of octaves and found it elsewhere Smile
