When we plug an external hard drive into a PC, there is an alert icon in Windows that tells us when to safely unplug it. Why is it not the same in the Kronos OS ? It is somehow useful

The Kronos is not running Windows - it is running linux for the underlying OS. Linux does not have cute notifications, nor did the developers choose to program such functionality in.
They did, however, include an indicator to display when the media (drive(s), memory sticks, DVD) are active, so just be sure the activity light is not lit when you want to unplug the USB device and you’ll be fine. |

The Kronos supports hot plugging. What that means is you can add and remove a disk while the system is running without damaging your device. Just make sure to not remove a disk for at least 10 seconds after saving onto it. |

It can also survive a hot unplug/re plug of the usb/midi connector into an iMac.
Don’t know what the results would be with a pc, though.
I sometimes do this, usually at the computer end, whenever the Kronos is not listed as a device.
This avoids a re-boot to establish the connection.
However,I wouldn’t recommend doing so on regular basis. |

Works fine in Windoze, as long as there aren’t open handles or write operations in progress. It is merely a consumer convenience for the non-technical. |

Thanks Tunaman & all for your replies.
It is not important but the fact it will be useful to have another signal on the Kronos to indicate that we can surely unplug an external drive (even if this external drive is not working at that time.
I have often did not care about this icon in Windows, but now I think it is not a useless thing.

My understanding of how desktops handle USB drives is that the writes are somewhat lazy. A desktop OS is busy doing many things, so it writes to the USB drive when it can as a lower priority task, because writing to USB is also a bit slow compared to various other tasks. If you tell it to eject then it prioritizes finishing any writes more and notifies you when complete.
My guess is since the Kronos has a dedicated disk mode, and is more of a purpose built OS, it’s less “lazy” about USB writes. So just wait for the drive light to stop flashing after a write + an extra 10s for good measure, and you’re good. At any rate the lack of an eject/safe to remove mechanism has never caused me a problem with Kronos. You? |
