Are there any limitations on drive replacements for the Kronos 1? It's good to see that Pa3XDK was successful with the Samsung 850 EVO, but that is a K2, which may have a different motherboard.

Many of the drives mentioned at the start of this thread in 2011 are no longer available. There are conflicting posts on whether the K1 can work with SATA 3.

In December 2011, marianghioda tried a SATA3 drive which didn't work, then installed a SATA2 drive which did work.

A short time later PGT installed a OCZ VERTEX 3 IOPS 120 (which is SATA3), and reported success.

Has anyone installed a new SSD (of the currently available drives) in a K1 in the past couple of years? Which ones work properly (or not)?

I'd like to try the Samsung 850 EVO MZ-75E250 250 GB if it is compatible.

I changed my 62GB Toshiba THNSNH062GCST to a 512GB Toshiba THNSNJ512GCST. With the Kronos 2 and OS 3.0.2, I did not have to reinstall the system. The drive worked perfect after the cloning and partition extension, with no more steps needed. Everything was still authorized, too, including the EXs17 and EXs18 sound libraries. Very Happy

I upgraded my 30GB Toshiba THNSNB030GBSJ to an OCZ Vector 128GB.

I used the procedure described by Tnt2gamer. I used Clonezilla for the cloning and Gparted for the resizing of korg/rw partition. I didn't reinstall anything from the DVDs.

In order to achieve that, you have to use the expert mode in Clonezilla. When you get to the point that gives you the choices with the asterisk, you have to un-tick everything and tick only -q1 (Force to use sector-by-sector copy).
See picture... http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/doc/03_Disk_to_disk_clone/images/ocs-05-b-2-expert-param-extra.png

When the cloning completes, use gparted to resize "korg/rw" partition.
You are done!

Plug in the new ssd and Kronos boots up with your new bigger drive and everything in its place! Very Happy

P.S. A piece of advice to those who want to buy a new ssd. Buy MLC ssd and NOT TLC! If you don't know the difference, watch the following video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9mbZUI0J3A

MLC SSDs last longer and are faster than TLC ones. I know that speed is limited by the SATA2 on the motherboard, but MLC drives have higher IOPS ( Random Read/Writes ) which is beneficial for KRONOS because it is streaming all the samples from the ssd. The most important thing though, is that they last longer. They allow more erase/write circles than TLC ones.

I had problem with my Kronos. It hanged every now and then.
I tried a lot of things like:
- reseating memory
- new memory
- using an power ups
etc.
Now, one other solution that might work was to replace the SSD. So I did. I made a clone with Active Disk Image and wrote it to my new SSD:
SAMSUNG 870 EVO sata 2.5"

And it works like a charm. I wasn't able to resize the partition (yet), but hey, at this moment my Kronos works the whole evening without hang-ups. Fingers crossed.

Yes I replaced the original SSD with a new Samsung EVO.

This is done on my Kronos 2 (2015 version with wooden side panels).
Latest OS and Subsystem.

I got this message:
"A problem has been detected, which may have been caused by cycling power too quickly. Please turn the KRONOS off, wait for 10 sec, and then turn it back on."

Now I am on day 2 playing my Kronos, without the error (knock on wood).
