22 years ago I found recording MIDI and audio from keyboards easy with a Desktop PC, a multi-channel MIDI interface, and Creative Arts Soundblaster audio card. Now, with laptops, one needs an audio interface. Is it really necessary to have, say, Left/Right inputs for each keyboard on an audio interface? Seems to me that a specific MIDI instruction coming from the laptop would only trigger the corresponding MIDI Rec Channel of the target keyboard, thus, you would hear the desired sound (and not all keyboards at once). Meaning, can I run 3 keyboards (six outputs) and a guitar (one output) into a stand-alone mixer, and take the Mixer's Left/Right output into the audio interface? I am aware that many audio interfaces have multiple inputs (which might suggest "No" to my question). Also, I am learning about MIDI/audio recording using Presonus Studio One Prime as my DAW.

The answer is yes, it is possible to pass audio from multiple sound modules (keyboards, rack synths etc), each set to respond to individual MIDI channels, through a multichannel stand-alone mixer, and then do whatever you like with the mixer's L/R outputs, be it PA system, audio interface input, standalone audio recorder, headphones....
