Kronos can handle it ..

Kronos is not comparable to the Pa4x - media structure of Kronos corresponds to a WORKSTATION well tuned to the preferred management of sample data, while the media structure of the Pa series corresponds to an arranger keyboard with preferred management of preset data (keyboard sets).
With Pa series ARRANGERS it is possible to create programs for these keyboard sets (Pcg files) with user sample data, just like with the Kronos, but managing the sample data is not a Pa arrangers priority.

While in the Pa series the user sounds (pcg files), multisamples (kmp files) and samples (pcm files) are in different folders whose data is linked to the other two folders, the Kronos is equipped with KSC files containing links to Sampling Mode, EXs, and/or User Sample Bank data, including Multisamples, Samples, and Drumsamples.

Loading a Kronos KSC file loads all of its linked data and KSC Auto-Load settings are saved automatically but are not part of its Global PCG file.
KRONOS can also automatically load one or more KSC files at startup and also can load KSC files immediately, directly without re-starting etc.... not comparable to a Pa series arranger.

The use of sound fonts also for the Kronos causes some effort if you like to have realistic sound with much layers. Automatically importing sf2-sounds without "preparing" multisamples/oszillators/zones mostly is an illusion.

Has anyone tried using Chicken Systems software (either Translator or Korg Creator) to properly get soundfonts into their Korg arranger?

Unfortunately not directly, but it is known that sf2-polyphonic (or any other sampler or editing program) has no idea what a Korg Multisample or Sample is. So if you dragged an Korg-Creators object into it (or tried to load it), it would reject it. "Preparing" is the act of writing behind the scenes temporary files that will be provided to the editing app. After you've "prepared" the Oscillator/Zone/Multisample/Sample, the list for Korg-Creator is display it as "prepared", and then your drag to the destination app will be successful.
*
Korg Creator contains the Chicken Systems Conversion Engine, that enables to import already-formed Bank or Instrument files of SoundFonts.
When you import an external Instrument, it adds Programs (PCGs) and Multisamples to their respective creators lists. This is done by dragging or select via menu - if you drag / drop it on the Program (pcg) List, it will convert the sf2 file and add a Program to the first "blank" (that is, initialized) Program, and add the converted Multisamples to the Multisample List. IMPORTING BANKS SIMPLY CREATES ONE OR MORE PROGRAMS (PCGs) to the ProgramList.

When importing sf2 into Korg format, there may be structural limitations where if you wanted to ensure all parameters were converted perfectly, you'd end up with multiple Programs/Presets being created, perhaps in more of a mess than you prefer.

In general tab of Korg Creator Preferences you will find the parameter "Tolerance" and setting this parameter to a higher percentage gives some grace to these parameters, so the conversion will be a little exact but you'll wind up with a cleaner organization that will be more usable to you.

If you deal with the structure of the SF2 format (http://www.synthfont.com/sfspec24.pdf), then it is also possible to import it with its sophisticated programmed synthesis parameters.

"Preparing" of overlapping zones, stereo samples, modulator controls, etc. is always necessary before (and after) importing, because if these are not taken into account, no sound corresponding to the original source data can be expected.
