Korg Kronos + AKAI LPD8

Post by Botticelli »

Good evening everyone,

I need someone's help! I can't get my Korg Kronos to communicate with the AKAI LPD8 controller.
Can someone who has succeeded can kindly explain all the steps to me?

Thank you

What do you want to do with the LPD8 and what is the history of the LPD8? Was it brand new, or has it been used on other equipment? If it is new, and unused, it should "work" out of the box, with the Kronos. The LPD8 Editor software can be used to configure the LPD8, but it is necessary to define what you want the LPD8 to do.

The nanoPAD2 is probably the easiest device to use with the Kronos, as the Kronos sets up, by default, to have the nanoPAD2 play the Kronos Chord Pads. The LPD8 won't do this out of the box.

I make a premise: I'm not very familiar with the MIDI Editor aspect in general. But I would like to use the LPD8 as a pad controller. It has 8 pads and I find it much more comfortable than the Nanopad (which I already have), and I can't configure it on the Kronos. I've tried a bit to tiggle with the LPD8 software editor, but I have a hard time setting it up.
Clearly, I am aware that it is not a "ready to use", and precisely for that I was looking for help, a tutorial that would help me in this operation

For the LPD8 to trigger Kronos' Chord Pads, two things need to be done.

1) The Kronos needs to have the Chord Pad trigger notes assigned (by default they are set to off, even though the nanoPAD works). On the Kronos, go to Global | Controllers/Scales | Controllers tab and, near the bottom of the screen, in the MIDI CC# Assign - Vector Joystick / Pads section, assign the trigger notes to each of the chord pads. The suggested note range is C-1 to G-1, which is below the normal playable range on the Kronos. Don't forget to write the Global settings from the top right of screen dropdown menu, when done.

2) The LPD8 needs to be configured, using the LPD8 Editor, to send notes corresponding to the notes (e.g. C-1 to G-1) that have been selected above. Using the LPD8 Editor is the only way that I'm aware, of configuring the LPD8. Use the LPD8 Quickstart Guide for help on how to install and use the software on Mac or PC. Ask on here if you get stuck.

PS: The Kronos doesn't like both the LPD8 and nanoPAD2 being connected at the same time.

PPS: Let us know how you get on.

Unfortunately after several attempts, and after carefully following your directions, it just doesn't seem to work. I will also do further tests with other devices to make sure there is not some basic malfunction.
