|
|
Recently bought a Triton Rack. It has firmware version 1.0.1. I had no way to create the floppies for the firmware upgrade, so I bought a USB floppy drive and some new floppy disks.
When I tried to upgrade the firmware I powered off the Triton Rack, held the write and enter buttons. The screen lit up but was blank, something like "insert disk1" flashes on the screen very quickly and the floppy drive activates. I release the buttons and the Triton powers up as usual. So, no update mode was entered.
I tried the above with the update disk in the drive, but the same thing happens. I tried holding the buttons for a long time and the floppy drive keeps activating, then stopping, then activating again, but nothing else happens. As soon as I release the buttons the Triton Rack powers up as usual, with no update mode.
I have tried putting the disk 1 firmware on several different floppies, all with the same result.
Any suggestions? I was planning on buying the MOSS board, but I don't think it will work without updating the firmware.
Thanks,

It has gone from bad to worse...
I tried loading a PCG from a floppy disk and it would not work. So the problem is with the floppy drive. I took the top off and re-seated all cables for the floppy. Tried to load the PCG file and it worked, so maybe one of the cables was a little loose.
I decided to do the OS upgrade since the floppy was working. Went into update mode, it showed "loading", then "erasing ROM", then "updating", then did those three things again. Then the floppy drive turned off and it sat in "updating" mode, no activity from the floppy drive.
After 30 minutes of no activity I powered it off and back on. The display lights up, but it is blank, and no other lights are on. It is unresponsive, no sound no anything... so I bricked my Triton Rack while trying to upgrade the OS. |

This may not work, depending on how the TR writes system updates to internal memory, but it's worth a try.
Power on the TR whilst holding down the [Menu] and [9] keys. If the LCD screen subsequently shows "Now writing into internal memory," then there may be hope.
One problem with floppy drives is the heads tend to get clogged, an occurrence not helped by the ageing characteristics of some of the binding agents used on magnetic media, and this may have happened during the OS upgrade. Using a floppy head cleaning disk may help.
Old magnetic tapes suffer from the same malaise.
