We all agree that there is no direct equivalent to the Kronos.
However to call it a masterpiece is definitely an overstatement.
Kronos leaves a lot to be desired.
As much as I love my Kronos, I have nearly the same amount of frustration.
Kronos have no adequate CPU support.
People who do live performances probably will not be effected, but the rest have to make compromises, scratch their heads how to squeeze every bit of "juice" out of Kronos. |
Well when I call it a "Masterpiece" I'm kind of coming from the angle of my experience with other gear I own. I don't want to come off as braging so don't take it that way but Keyboards from Nords, to Moogs, to Dave Smiths to Ensoniqs just a lot in my studio I've accumulated over the years. Whenever I use one piece of gear I'm always thinking can I do this sound better on another keyboard or what Keyboard can bring this track out better.
What I find with the Kronos is that it's capable of really doing pretty much everything those other keyboards can. From delicate sampling right down to modeling itself after Analog synths. The piano's on it are indistinguishable from the real thing BUT and there's always the BUT with the Korg Workstations and that's that you can go in and edit and tweak every sound parameter to your catering in such a depth that you can get lost in it.
I know people talk about live stuff but as having started out with Korgs older touch screen work stations this Keyboard has really come a long way.
The Trinity was not meant to be a live Keyboard it was a studio Keyboard but because of it's tech and sound it ended up getting used as a live keyboard also and then it happened with the Karma and the korg OASYS and so on. Finally Korg was like lets give our Studio Keyboard live features since people are using it for live performances and they did so to a level that is really quite amazing to me. It's like they gave you the option of a performer Keyboard with backing tracks and all that but gave it to you as a workstation. Watching guys recreate songs and linking chords and parts with the Nano Pad is crazy now that I can't even do on the Nord and that's a live keyboard.
So I'm just saying it's Masterpiece to me at least because it's a jack of all trades except it does everything well.
My complaints about the Kronos is Korgs lack of educational support for it. This is a keyboard that needs an in depth tutorial and printed manuals for it not just the quick facts but a real manual that you can reference when needed without the disk (of course all the info is built into the keyboard and it will tell you) but still there's so much this thing can do that I feel a lot of users miss out on because they just never go through the manual. |

I mean what exactly were you all expecting in a new flagship workstation which Kronos doesn't have or can't do?
Expectations are funny like that; you never know you needed something until you actually see it! |
The Kronos doesn’t exhaust all the possibilities for sound engines, so right there is an answer to your question.
How many of the so-called “engines” in the Kronos are actually Virtual Analog? Maybe all of those should only count as one.

Does anyone know if the Kronos SE contains a mono version of the Italian Grand? IIRC, the Grandstage has it. |

Saw it today at the NAMM. I don't know if it was the lighting or what, but i didn't like the paint job at all. It looked nicer in the promo video than it did in person. Again, it could be the lighting. It doesn't really matter. Kronos is a great keyboard regardless. _________________ Sam

Since you gig, a gig ready mono is a must.
More bigger picture, I am waiting for an updated Program list on the SE.
Since it has the Italian and that Exs 272, it must have additional new Programs, guessing they took over a user CC and DD bank for them. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Thanks !
I am not sure I like how Korg presented this color. I agree w/ Broadwav', it looks blotchy.
IOW, the red in the center should be less red. And the entire top cover should have the red hi-light.
Right now, it looks 2 tone. Red in the center and black on the left/right side.
It looks like a short cut was taken on the color/gradient. Usually Korg is good
with color scheme, so I might be wrong _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

In the looks department, plastic sides and all, I still think Korg did good with the original Kronos. Classy and elegant. It looks nice in the studio. |

It could be due to file format - PNG ( palette-based images ). |
