Hi Sparkie,
Funny that you mentioned kazoo because just the other day, someone on the MacProVideo forum posted about exactly the same thing and I got to wondering if it would be possible to synthesize a convincing kazoo. Might be possible with MOD-7, actually. So I tell you what... when I get my Kronos I'll give it a whirl, and if I think it'll pass muster I'll post a file here.
Quote: | BTW I hope you are creating some more sounds to "add on" for the Knonus. |
Thanks for that. Indeed I'd like to, but for the next few months I'm booked solid with other work. When there's a lull in the action (almost inevitable being a freelance composer as I am) then for sure I'll give Korg a call and see what's cookin'.
Cheers,
Peter |

OK That would be great as believe it or not many of the 60s psyche songs used a Kazoo in them, Stones album "Majesties Request" and some John Lennon ones.. ! Thanks... |

Sparkie -
Man, just buy an Vintage Virtual-Analog Kazoo at the dollar store and mic it.
Don't wait for the Tissue-paper & Comb Modeling software add-on for Away-sys or Kronos.

Sparkie,
From a sound design perspective, there are four elements to consider for any sound, but let's focus on the kazoo.
1) pitch: it's got to sound fairly unstable. Whether the pitch instability is automatic or user-controllable is an option, meaning: when you play the sound, it could automatically -- and realistically -- waver in pitch like a real kazoo. Or, the amount of waver could be put on a knob or vector joystick so you could control the amount yourself. And pitch modulation could be independent for each key you play so that the sound of playing (EGAD!) kazoo chords would sound like truly independent kazoo players. ALL THAT'S EASY
2) timbre: that's the hard part. I'm thinking that MOD-7 or STR-1 would be the way to go for the basis of the sound, but which one would be the most effective remains to be seen.
3) duration: clearly that would be controlled by how long you hold down the key. It would be a sustaining sound. THAT'S EASY
4) loudness: the envelope should be sharp and maybe have a little bit of a loudness "blip" at the top. It should probably have a fairly minimal amount of velocity control. Realtime dynamics could be controlled by JS+Y or JS-Y or the Ribbon. Or even another axis on the vector joystick. So I'd propose a scheme where the sound is heard at a not-too-loud-to-be-too-annoying volume when you play keys and from there the volume could be adjusted using some kind of control. THAT'S EASY TOO
So really, the question comes down to which model to use to get the basic buzzy sound. Hmmm.... |
